How recruiters know of jobs?

Do recruiters get hired by companies - firms to find staff or do they surf the internet and try to pitch you to open jobs?
A recruiter who I signed up with years ago and was never any help called me and told me he had the perfect job for me. Turns out the firm has the same job posting for all to see on their own website and it's posted on other sites.
It would be a good job, I think. If I had found it on my own and just applied, would I have the chance to get more money? Or is the firm paying the recruiter a fee out of their pocket and I might get the same rate, if it comes through?

These parasitic leeches scour the Internet via (Facebook, Linkedin, Reddit, Monster, Jobs Boards, QBN, etc...) looking for desperate companies...that are looking for fresh meat to fill their seats.
These P.O.S. recruiters constantly: call, email and harass employees at their respected places of work....trying to convince and purge them into another job position with another company so that they can collect their extortion fee.

Or companies that are looking for something specific and not finding it (or don't have the time) on regular ads.
They bring value for people that can use them.
Some pays, so generally they'll take a percentage of the prospect's salary/pay. They want it to be successful or they won't get paid, so there's incentive for them to find the right person.

Seems like creative circle is dominating the recruiting world?

The person I'm dealing with runs his own "company". I'd hate to think someone out there is spamming companies with my name.

depends. some recruiters have paid relationships with agencies so they're able to get you in the door easier than if you had done it on your own.
i would stay away from creative circle and the like. there are some good ones out there though.

There's some good recruiters out there. They aren't all bad. Looking back, they got me my first job in advertising in NYC. They were usually hot too.
