After Effects - Dependencies - Collect Files
You'll get what you need, although adding in the fonts would be nice. Quark Express did it 30 years ago.

The real problem is even if you check the Selected Comps option, you know you're going to get tons of crap you never asked for.

    • I've spent so much time going through the project folders and saying saying, "No. I didn't want you.", then doing the same with the footage folder on my drive.CyBrainX
    • reduce project first. be careful to save separately to keep your original.shapesalad
    • You select the comps you want to keep - reduce project. Save As. Then do a collect files. Font Book - grab font. Send to co-worker.shapesalad
    • I think they don't bundle fonts to avoid licensing issues; The engine that deals with font DRM in ID, Acrobat, AI, etc. isn't in AE.evilpeacock

The whole saving process in Photoshop is so odd now:

Save, Save as, Save a copy, Quick export, Quick export as, Export for web, ...

Save as JPG is not possible anymore when there are layers (it used to ask if ok to flatten in the past).

Also I recently get a "Save to cloud" screen first, even though I just want to save locally.

    Is Adobe reading this thread?

    • affinity photo, just sayinghans_glib
    • I really miss Photoshop, if I'm honest. Affinity's useful enough, but there are so many things PS Just Does Better. That said, fuck Adobe.Nairn
    • And as Not Great as Designer is, it's utterly unusable for my work as it doesn't handle stroke thicknesses under 0.1pt or something. Useless.Nairn
    • And also asset export with its own set of separate conventions. And then legacy output modes. So weird.monospaced
    • This is a good point. They really should have one export window with tabs for GIFs, PDFs, layer comps to images, PNGs, etc. All of it.CyBrainX
    • Never save, use iPhone to photograph your artwork from the monitor, clients so far haven't noticed. Keep computer running 24/7 and all projects open.shapesalad
    • better yet just do a screen capture. Use any free software, and don’t mind how it compresses, nobody will notice.monospaced
    • this never made sense to me. I get the idea that "export" is for files other than .psd files and that's what adobe nominally considers as "saving" but that's socherub
    • some marketing douche's wet dream. nobody fucking cares adobe. just use the word "save" and drop all the dorky "export" talk.cherub
    • They need more options: 'Save export as', 'Slow save mode', 'Export and save a copy', 'Quick save as an export' 'copy as an export' 'save export and copy'shapesalad
    • even the most fanatical adobe fanboy has at least heard of non-adobe programs even if they don't use them.cherub
    • it should just be save, save as, export. all streamlined, optimised, fast, great ui.shapesalad
    • It's the result of too much legacy stacking; e.g. PS can't get rid of "Save for Web..." because it's still the only way to do some things (animated GIF).evilpeacock
    • You can change the settings back to a legacy version. That's what I did and it's all fine. But yeah, it's stupid.formed
    • I still save for web for most shit.monospaced
    • With save as and export as a 500x400px JPG resulted at 20mb. Really time some Adobe dude checks on this.SimonFFM

Petitioning Adobe to fix Media Encoder issues that have been annoying for years.

    • Just do yourself a favour, export Pro Res and mp4 it with Handbrake.shapesalad
    • What he saidGabriel
    • But that's two steps in rendering. I can almost as easily do that with After Effects and then Media Encoder. .CyBrainX
    • Media Encoder doesn't have issues exporting to the same folder as the source, whether it's an.mov or .aep in the AME folder.CyBrainX
    • What I'm fighting for is the one-step output from AE to mp4 that Media Encoder was made for.CyBrainX
  • NBQ002

I wish they'd put in more effort in some AI tech to generate realistic shadows.

Let's say you have a cutout of a person and place it on a background. You could define the floor and light source/ direction/ type/ strength, etc and Photoshop would generate a realistic non-linear shadow that you could further tweak.

Nothing more annoying than creating realistic shadows with good contact shadows and nice falloff.

  • CyBrainX0

    Media Encoder: Adobe's worst product.

Can I please CONSISTENTLY change output settings for multiple files at the same time?
Can you stop appending _1 in the file name to files I want to replace?
Can you take less than a half hour to open moderately complex After Effects files?

    • Each of these things happen randomly, without explanation or pattern to the fuckery.CyBrainX

Today is the end of, what is for me, a very long era.

I'm nixing my CC subscription, just doing Illy, which I absolutely need, and am moving off my once-beloved Photoshop to Affinity Photo. I've been using Photoshop since version fucking 3.

But, I use Photoshop so little, and generally for really basic things I could've done with Photoshop 7(or whatever), so it's really hard to justify continue paying for. I really don't use anything else in the CC suite either.

By the way, Affinity are selling their wares at half price at the moment.

So long, and thanks for the fish.

    :(

    .

Affinity Designer's a steaming mess to my eyes though, so although I have it, I think I'll continue not using it.

    • Cue PonyBoy in 3, 2, 1...Nairn
    • I'll be saving myself £370 over the next year, and about £410 per year subsequently.Nairn
    • It's not much, monthly, but given I've been looking all my finances recently (I wonder why?), it's not an insignificant amount at the end of the year either.Nairn
    • media encoder to cut and convert mp4 to gifsted
    • I've been using the Affinity suite for a year or so. My usage is light, so it's been great. The only issue I ran into is it doesn't handle .webp files.section_014
    • Doing the same at end of year when CC sub is up. I don't need CC like I used to. Affinity fills the gap now. BTW Affinity apps 50% right now.ETM
    • I'm sure you know, but there are tons of vids on YT for all things Affinity. Good luck!stoplying
    • I still use Audition, Photoshop, Illy, Bridge...sometimes Premiere and started now with Lightroom. I know alternatives to all of them except Bridge.oey_oey
    • And I could live without Adobe for what I do but having all at once seemingly integrated and just there...I have all Affinity Apps but I couldn't make the jumpoey_oey
    • huh? hmm... had no idea I made that sort of impression on you... I have little opinion about your post btw outside I'm glad you seem content w/your choice. xoxoPonyBoy
    • I should've added a ;) or something thereNairn
    • How is Affinity Photo vs Lightroom? I've dabbled in Darktable, and I fucking hate it.garbage
    • I've been told so many times that you get used to the quirkiness of Darktable, but again: I fucking hate it.garbage
    • just pirate the Adobe stuff, it's easier than it has ever been to get them workiing - some torrents come pre-cracked.face_melter
    • Urgh.
Darktable is to Lightroom as GIMP is to Photoshop.
Fuck it up the ass. To death.
      Continuity
    • @face Yeah, I think the future is, as one colleague so eloquently put it when CC launched, "less than legal".garbage
    • @Cont It makes no sense. Somebody tried to give me the "Darktable is to Lightroom as Resolve is to Premiere". Demonstrably false.garbage
    • i would not disagree with your comment about aff designer. it is inferior to ai in many ways. i'm forcing myself to persevere, but have cs3 as backup.hans_glib
    • @hans I don't know if you remember, but in a graffiti thread I made a joke about tagging your name. It got buffed before I could get a flick..garbage
    • ..seriously quick, it was gone in the morning. But know for one night there was an electrical box in Seattle that said "HANS GLIB LIVES".garbage
    • RawTherapee?oey_oey
    • @garbage my fifteen minutes of fame right therehans_glib
    • Back on topic, though ... I haven't used Designer, but I have used Publisher, and it's mostly pretty good, except for the layers palette behaviour.Continuity
    • A Designer...no trace...oey_oey
    • Designer needs a lot of work in the UX/workflow area, and needs accessibility features for PDFs added.i_monk

I hit "No" a bunch of times then it asked for access to specific folders (fine), and now that.

Adobe reported $4.26 billion in review last quarter.

    • glad to say none of that was taken from me.
      fucking scammers.

Photoshop keeps adding really ugly LUTs to the presets folder every time there's an update. I have my own LUTs and don't want the list full of Adobe LUTs (e.g. HorrorBlue).

I manually delete the presets folder contents. Is there a way to tell Photoshop not to put the ugly LUTs in there?

It's really a first world problem, I know.

    • changing the rights to read only on the 3DLUTs folder could work. not tested, just an idea.uan
    • thanks, I couldn't figure out who is writing though (System, Trusted Installer, etc.), so I'll probably just keep manually deleting...SimonFFM
    • Share your LUTs!Gnash

What happened to the Refine Edge selection tool? That thing used to be perfect nearly every time. Now, it just adds to the mask which is the opposite of what anyone would want.

    • * Subtracts from the maskCyBrainX
    • Select and Mask now I think, there’s a whole interface for it.monospaced
    • Yes, it's very similar looking but it's a miserable failure now.CyBrainX

Can we have an Activate Font Family button?
It's not fun activating 18 weights, one by one.

    • Never mind. There is a button All Fonts Active on each font family page.CyBrainX
    • This issue was fixed with version 26.2.1.CyBrainX

Adobe seriously need to overhaul the 3D viewport in After Effects. It's so shite. And the way it's handling the zooming and viewing of it. The navigation is so crappy, just frustration.

It has been the same pretty much since the 90's?

They really need to make it like other pro compositors like Nuke or Flame.

Any being able to import 3D objects as well and some basic 3D options. They could incorporate their new 3D tech and make it compatible with the "Substance 3D"-apps.

AE hasn't really gotten any substantial big stuff in the past 10-20 years it's really time they overhaul this.

    • make one point camera. make null. turn on '3d' for null. parent cam to null. animate the null position/rotation. don't use camera tools.shapesalad
    • but yeah, the 3d in it is shite it's making blender seem more a viable tool.shapesalad
    • Blender isn't an alternative to After Effects but I avoid After Effects 3D like the plague. There's nothing like a dedicated program for 3D.CyBrainX
    • There's a reason AE comes with C4D "Lite".evilpeacock
    • Who uses "C4D Lite"? I also don't wanna use a real external 3D program for comping stuff in 3D.NBQ00
    • I can't think of another program that doesn't have smooth zooming. It's been about 35 years. Can we have that some time before we retire?CyBrainX

I finally got a very tough project approved this morning. All of a sudden my computer crashes and I can't open my after effects file. Auto save is set to every 15 minutes but my newest file is from last night. I have to recreate a day of work, aside from imported PSDs other linked files.

    • this kind of shit makes you change careers...grafician
    • (activate Time machine if you use Apple and you'll maybe have different file versions saved somewhere :| )grafician
    • sounds odd - check where it was saved? maybe the autosaves are in another location, search hd for file name.shapesalad
    • AE autosaves are always adjacent to the project file *unless* you've manually set a custom location. Worth checking in prefs.evilpeacock
    • I used to put AE autosaves on a different volume/in Dropbox, etc. just to be sure, but organization gets chaotic after a while.evilpeacock
    • The autosave files were adjacent to the project file. I went into two recent temp aep files in the AME folder and was able to...CyBrainX
    • ...together the day's work. All my linked files were fine. It cost me less than an hour but it was terrifying. Most of that work had just been approved.CyBrainX

WHY TF does Adobe fucking Illustrator SAVE IN BACKGROUND a 20-30MB file ON A FUCKING APPLE SSD WITH HUNDREDS OF GB OF BANDWIDTH?!

Explain to me you fucking morons from Adobe why is this a thing?

  • Nairn0

Had problems with the internet at work today. Don't know what's going on, but weak wifi connection, which kept dropping out.

So, Illustrator refused to work. I mean, it was working, but after a reset, it wouldn't let me use it without a check.

I'm midway through my billing period, so there's really no need to get flustered at a check anyway, yet I was unable to work, so left to come home.

    Fucking Adobe. Fucking, fucking Adobe.

    • And yes, it only dawned on me when I got back I could've plugged in my mobile's connection. Subconsciously, I just wanted a whinge, and to come home.Nairn
    • But still.Nairn
    • we should be able to use software without being connected. train, plane, remote location. always on is an unreasonable expectation of infrastructure & resourcesimbecile
    • Yup. And we should also be able to by software without some stupid fucking subscription too, but here we are in this most glorious future.Nairn
    • apple and bmw are planning for hardware subscriptions (somehow different than a lease) if they have their way, we'll never own anything again.imbecile
    • "yes, your car came with heated seats installed, but unless you subscribe, you can't access that warm fuzzy feeling."imbecile

I just upgraded to Apple Monterey 12.3 and PS 23.2.2

And now Photoshop 23.2.2 "Can't open/update vector smart object in Illustrator!"

    Fuck You Adobe & Apple!

  • CyBrainX0

I have a feeling we all take this for granted after years of abuse, but why can't Media Encoder remember the last folder you saved from?

Why would it default to the AME folder at the same level as your AE file? That's the last place anyone would put anything. I wish that folder wasn't even necessary.

    • Just use handbrake. Export pro res, mp4 with handbrake.shapesalad
    • ^ this but sometimes the AE-ME is quicker for me. It is a pain deleting all those temp AME projects.MrT
    • Get Anubis if you're looking for quick exports, exports MP4 and ProRes directly from AE UIfyoucher1

I was trying to use the posterizeTime() expression in After Effects. Here are two restrictions:
It has to be the first line of code.
It can't be the only line of code, You can type value; as a workaround.

    • that sounds like a feature, not a bug.monNom
    • I'm not saying it's a bug but it's not obvious at all. Maybe we need an Adobe Tip of the Day thread.CyBrainX
    • sorry for the confusion. I was being sarcastic.monNom
  • Nairn0

    In Illustrator:

If you have x objects each of about the same colour, but one is like 4 blue off the rest's RGB, you can't enter a value into the Blue box and hit enter for it to set them all to the same variable.

You have to use the sliding widget.

    Stupid.

    • Sorry, visual example here is Red, not blue, daft twat.Nairn
    • Isn't there a Global tick to check around there somewhere in Colors?
And if you change that global color it changes every object?
      Something like that
      grafician
    • you used to be able to hold down the alt key on the pipette to make one object grab another's colour settings.hans_glib
    • in affinity it's simply copy then alt paste and job donehans_glib
    • I can alt mouse select the colour, sure - i think that's what i normally do. But WTF can't i also do <this? it's so horribly inconsistent.Nairn
