- The advancement is very real. That’s because Science isn’t a belief system, it’s simply actual progress at work.monospaced

Memory transferred between snails, challenging standard theory of how the brain remembers
“If he’s right, this would be absolutely earth-shattering,” said Tomás Ryan, an assistant professor at Trinity College Dublin, whose lab hunts for engrams, or the physical traces of memory

CaSSIS sends first colour images from primary science orbit
This image is from the rim of Koralev crater (165.9 E, 73.3 N) at 5.08 m/px with a ground-track velocity of 2.90 km/s. The solar incidence angle was 76.6 deg at a local solar time of 07:14:11.The CaSSIS test images have looked pretty good so far - even at low Sun. We do have a problem with an Error Detection and Correction (EDAC) software in the instrument which we are trying to solve. CaSSIS detects this and re-boots itself when that happens. The spacecraft doesn't like that!! We are working with ESOC in Darmstadt to find better ways of dealing with the issue. Should be manageable in the short term with a fix due to be ready in a couple of weeks.

Wow. I mean - Wow.
It's only a second long, but here's video from the surface of a comet, from the Rosetta mission.

We need a space thread. Or perhaps this should go in News of the Day. Anyway.
The following png file (which may not load-in here) auto updates every few minutes (you'll need to hit manually F5 though), showing the latest tracking data on the Chinese space station that's due to make landfall in about 4½ hours.
As well as how quickly it's going, it's interesting seeing how much the altitude changes every 10 minutes or so - I'm not really sure how, but it somehow went up a few km earlier. Not sure if incorrect data or somehow bouncing off atmosphere (4km seems like a heck of a bounce, mind..)
- Ah, I figured it wouldn't embed.

Oh, I thought I'd already posted this somewhere?
This is REALLY weird - observable, measurable - much 'odder' to me than Dark Matter or Energy, which as far as I'm concerned could be simply down to local measurement or perceptual flaws or limitations...

- agree, just because it seems empty between atoms, doesn't mean it's is. Perhaps we just can't see/measure what's there with our primitive science.shapesalad

There is a scientific debate about the limits of science.
Our current limits of observation and how theory has detached itself from experiment in modern physics.https://www.quantamagazine.org/p…
Quantum Mechanics, String Theory and Matter Antimatter models are not proven at all, and maybe never will be.
(in reply to MorningStar and mono)
- But if they ever will be, I guarantee it will be due to the scientific progress. Just like all progress made by mankind in the last couple millennia.monospaced
- There is no other method, and never will be one, that we will can use to figure it out. No other institution exists to tackle these questions.monospaced
- Therefore it’s not a belief system.monospaced
- Anyway. Saying quantium theory can’t be proven is useless. Quantum mechanics are real, happening and measurable. Like gravity, also can’t be proven. still theremonospaced
- So, quite a lot like gods then ;)Morning_star
- Nope. Gods can’t be observed, measured, tested, verified like gravity. Gravity is there, so are quantum mechanics. Gods are myth and no more.monospaced
- Anyway. Just because one of a billion scienctific theories is shaky is not an argument in favor of supernatural child stories about childish gods.monospaced
- I think the most scientific way to look at it is to acknowledge that we don't know much at all yet, but we are looking at it and have some ideas about ituan
- Yes. That is the scientific method. Science will allow us to look into it and figure it out. Nothing else will or can or ever has.monospaced
- I also think that the true meaning of religions was to liberate humans through spirituality, but that mission got corrupted in history to accumulate power...uan
- ...and to control humans.
at the bottom of spirituality you find humanistic principles that make our lives and our societies better.uan - well, then it was corrupted from the onset, as you'd be hard pressed to find anything liberating or disconnected from power in western religionmonospaced
- liberate humans through spirituality??? fuck me.futurefood
- religion came from a group of pricks with silly hats asking, 'how do we monetize this?'futurefood

Science: who would have believed in such madness.
"While dark matter has yet to be directly observed by scientists, it is generally considered a vital ingredient in the birth of galaxies.
Now it seems that at least some galaxies exist with lots of stars and gas and hardly any dark matter. It is pretty bizarre."
- madness? please ...monospaced
- it's not a belief system ... if they discover their "belief" is not accurate, it's up for revision, which is the case in this situation I suppose :)monospaced

Medicine might have found a new organ, the “interstitium” could explain many of modern medicine’s mysteries, often dismissed by the establishment as either silly or explainable by other phenomena.
