If the service is free, YOU are the product.

This is a tired and laboured point but it's amazing how many people just don't seem to understand the concept. All those lovely likes and friend requests that make you feel like you actually mean something to someone come at a price and that's the deal.

It's a fantastic business concept that fundamentally exploits human insecurity in return for data. If you don't like it don't use them, pick up the phone, write a letter, have video call and maybe when all this plague shit is over we can meet people IRL.

    • i agree. just stay away from that shit.

    • We're missing that part where data companies get taxed and reviewed based on the quality of the data they collect and use.sted

It’s you vs a team of 200 PhDs who’s entire job is to make you spend more time on the platform and make more clicks. It’s invasive marketing on a level that has never occurred in human history, and also happens to have the effect of amplifying the craziest voices. It’s hijacking people’s psychology, creating fights when peace would be better, because fights are less boring. And you pay for it, just with the dissolution of society where you might’ve talked to your neighbors. How many families have been split because of Facebook radicalization of conservatives? Mine for one.

I believe strongly that the social media and internet ad business models are at best amoral but responsible for the second order effects, much as coal plants are responsible for pollution. At worst they are making money off of making people crazy by giving every crazy person a megaphone and making sure you have to hear from them."

A recently fired Facebook data scientist wrote a lengthy memo detailing the tech giant's failures to stop election interference in countries around the world, per a Buzzfeed report.

The employee, whose job was to find "inauthentic activity," wrote that the company was slow to take action against fake accounts used to manipulate political outcomes in nations like India, Ukraine, Bolivia, and many more.

Instead, Sophie Zhang wrote Facebook prioritized its public image in choosing which fake networks to investigate, even if the "disproportionate impact" of real-world problems would go ignored.

The report is the latest example of Facebook's long-standing struggle to stop the spread of misinformation and election interference and to prioritize content moderation on its platform.

"Facebook must be broken up, the US government says in a groundbreaking lawsuit"

"Dozens of states and the federal government sued Facebook (FB) on Wednesday in twin antitrust lawsuits, alleging that the social media giant has abused its dominance in the digital marketplace and engaged in anticompetitive behavior.

The Federal Trade Commission, in particular, is seeking a permanent injunction in federal court that could, among other things, require the company to divest assets, including Instagram and WhatsApp, effectively breaking up Facebook as we know it. The agency also wants to require Facebook to seek prior notice and approval for future mergers and acquisitions.
"Personal social networking is central to the lives of millions of Americans," said Ian Conner, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Competition, in a statement. "Facebook's actions to entrench and maintain its monopoly deny consumers the benefits of competition. Our aim is to roll back Facebook's anticompetitive conduct and restore competition so that innovation and free competition can thrive.""

Bannon's beheading comments aren't enough to ban him from Facebook

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told staff at a company meeting on Thursday that Steve Bannon suggesting that Dr. Anthony Fauci and FBI Director Christopher Wray should be beheaded was not enough of a violation of Facebook's rules to permanently suspend the former White House chief strategist from the platform, according to a Facebook employee.

Today, we’re announcing some important updates to how people log into Oculus devices, while still keeping their VR profile. Starting in October 2020:

Everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.

If you’re an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you’ll have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts.

If you’re an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years.

A Facebook recruiter filed a federal complaint alleging the company is biased against Black employees and job candidates.

A Facebook recruiter and two rejected job applicants filed a complaint Thursday with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission accusing the company of discriminating against Black workers, as first reported by The Washington Post.

The three workers, all of whom are Black, alleged that Facebook has a pattern of "racial discrimination in hiring, evaluations, promotions, and pay" for Black employees and job applicants.

"There may be Black Lives Matter posters on Facebook's walls, but Black workers don't see that phrase reflecting how they are treated in Facebook's own workplace," the complaint says.

Facebook has faced accusations about racism within its walls previously, including from a Black former executive, anonymous Black employees, and other Black recruiters.

The company is also facing growing pressure from employees, civil rights groups, and more than 500 advertisers to take a stronger stance on moderating hate speech on its platform.
