Im designing a desktop site for a client and was just wondering what the average height for a site is now days. Is 1400px wide by 800px high to small / large / disproportioned?
Thanks in advance!

1060x740 maybe?

I think you should still use the 980 grid. It will work on the tablets as well.

iPad dimensions + responsive.
1400 is huge.

@fredddddd they're not going with the tablet and mobile websites which I quoted them on because in "not in the budget". They only did $4 million in sales last year. I have a feeling they'll reconsider after the desktop site is complete.
Whats the ipad screen res btw?
- fredddddd0
$4 million is high.
You can't design a website based on average screen height, it's not 2002.
Do one responsive site that works on tablet and phone and laptop and screens, no question.

Im just designing the front end and they're having programmed on their end. They insisted on it.
Would having a responsive site entail creating new design layouts and psd's or is that something they would do when programming the site?- Responsive is mainly front-end dev. Are you saying you are just doing PSDs?ETM
- You got to design something to be responsive. It's not a check mark.fredddddd
- @ETM Im building the psd's and then handing them off yes, why do you ask?partdeux
- You will have to show how the content scales and flows, so yes, more design layouts.ETM
- The effort involved will depend on the complexity of the layout.ETM
- It's normally easier to start with mobile first then build up to how it presents on desktop.ETM

What's a PSD?

@ETM thanks for pointers above. Im definitely taking note to start with the mobile layouts for future website designs plus making sure I roll that extra time into the quote

Fold doesn't fucking exist
- yerolda0
First of all there is no fold.
Second of all if we have to entertain the notion that there is a fold then what device or monitor would this "fold" be on?
How much of their web traffic is desktop/tablet/mobile? Pretty crucial information to have before deciding on on how you build a website.

The fold exists for certain corporate clients — like one of mine — who insist on optimisation for 1024*768, and whose machines _only_ have IE7 installed.
It's fucking cruel.
- They also inhabit a Twilight Zone reality where they think full Flash microsites are what all the cool kids are doing these days.Continuity
- Splash page anyone?yerolda
- They love those, too. :(Continuity

The fold doesn't exist for anyone. Content heirarchy does but not the fold. The only way to combat this nonsense is to actually prove to them that it doesn't exist by examining their web traffic. I'm positive you'd see a large portion of it would come from mobile and tablets.
- Mobile traffic disproves the fold exists? Please go on.monospaced
