So i need a new machine, but i don't know what is the best solution for me. I want a big screen, at least 27" and need some portability.
. Buy an Imac?
. Buy a MacBook Pro with an Apple Display?
. Buy a Mac mini with an Apple Display?
. Buy a Macbook Pro with a 30" DELL display?I will do mostly web and branding stuff.

You can wait a week or so and see what Apple is announcing at WWDC in regards to a new Mac Pro and their portable line. Otherwise, the iMacs provide way more performance for price than the MacBooks by a significant margin, so I'd recommend one of those with maxed out RAM if you don't need full portability.
- < definitely wait until WWDC is donehereswhatidid
- yep wait, not for the products but for the pricedrop after new announcementsmekk

iMac if you don't need to take it anywhere. Bought a 27" in february of this year and it's a beast.
- I have a 27" too, it's super quick.monospaced
- love mineset
- The display is epic, and I'm always astounded by the speaker quality (I know, it's superficial yet impressive).monospaced
- agreed, speakers are great. Image is so close to the glass compared to older models...set
- (too)set
- Do you have the current model?Irafis
- Yes, the current gen iMac, released in the fall.d_rek
- I got the new one, yes.monospaced
- I got mine just over a month agoset
- Released in the winter for the 27"monospaced
- and you can swap in your own RAM with the 27".jaylarson
- yes, just pop open the door and slip in/out RAMmonospaced

Got one of the lightning cinema displays in December... The big advantage seems to be it has a MBP power supply built in to it so you just connect the cable and your sorted - then you've got additional ethernet/ firewire/ usb on the back.... of course I have it permanently plugged in my iMac and never use any of that shit so I'd stay away if you end up goin the iMac route.
Also, the cinema displays are still about 4 times the thickness of the iMacs, which is a bit shit considering they're so fucking dear.
Love it tho.

^ The super thin iMacs are retarded though.
You trade ram upgradability, replaceable hard drives and heat dispersion for a thinness that you can't see from the angle you use the thing.
A beefier graphics card and the same case size would have been a better upgrade
- the graphics cards are beefier, and they do pass on the savings from the missing disc drivemonospaced
- they are retarded. I'd rather have a CD drive. Though I only ever use it to burn my Mum CD's...set
- I used a $20 drive for the 1 time I've needed a disc in the last 6 monthsmonospaced
- Oh, and my iMac is RAM upgradeable to 32 GB, anytime I wantmonospaced
- bought it maxed out with a superdrive, i aint upgrading shit :)kingsteven
- It's the 21.5" ones that you can't upgrade...set
- They didn't offer a superdrive, kingsteven, so you might not have the newest gen.monospaced
- I bought the 27" to keep the RAM accessible, a faster GPU, and almost 2X the screen real-estate.monospaced
- ah, i mean this thing whatever it's called http://imgur.com/qnq…kingsteven
- oh, yeah! of course, my bad, I thought you mean "inside" the iMac, ahhahamonospaced

@animatedgif
I ordered mine with 16gb ram, 1tb fusion drive (flash + sata hdd), and 2gb vid card. I'm not doing any intensive video editing so I suspect this thing will suit my needs for many years to come.
I don't miss the optical drive at all either. Those things are on their way to becoming fossils anyhow.
- I wish I had gone for the 2GB card, but stuck with the 675MX. Just bought 16GB Crucial RAM for $120monospaced

Mac Mini or Macbook and and some other 27" monitor. If you never need to move it, Mac Mini.
- I think once you get a mini as powerful as the iMac, it's better to get the iMac and a free display ;) plus real GPUmonospaced
- depends on what you're doing with that gpu really.section_014

my work machine just went kaput this afternoon. Kernel Panics on boot and shit...
I was going to be upgraded to the new Tower, but it doesn't seem to come out until fall. Damn it. Why did it had to die so young.
Maybe it's cheap repair. we'll see.- the little fucker finally booted.. maybe there's a god after all.ESKEMA
- BACK UP NOW. Prepare for new machine still. Do not hesitate, just get a new HD and back up carefully.monospaced
- yeah I backed up everything on the spot via target mode to a coworker machine. I'm still waiting for it to crash again..ESKEMA
- It probably will. Could be a motherboard problem, or a failing HD, or as simple as a loose wire. Good luck.monospaced

Get a laptop and a large screen to plug it into.

Do you know guys if Apple will reintroduce the 30" Apple Display?
- Milan0
MacBook Pro with Retina?

Get the biggest, meanest, fastest iMac for work. And then a wee iPad to take to the coffee shop, watch Netflix, etc.

@d_rek
Fair enough, just keep in mind with that model they glue the glass to the screen so have fun coughing up $$$ when your hard drive inevitably dies in a few years. The hard drive crashed on my 1st gen Alu iMac lately. I was able to replace it (and upgrade it) myself in an hour or so because the screen is held on with magnets not glue.
That's my real problem with the new iMacs, unlike laptops there is absolutely no reason for turning them into a non-serviceable glued together object.

MB Pro + external display gives you the most flexibility. You don't need a separate laptop then and will be able to upgrade your display when the world goes Retina.
If you don't do motion/video, a top MB Air will easily be enough, it is quite powerful.

iMacs are very good value (for an apple that is)

Remember to wait till all the new shit comes out next week.
