What does everyone think about fireworks?
As a software for designing websites?

It's what it's always been intended for, unlike Photoshop. Merges similar capabilities to PS and Illustrator in one package.
That said, it's a resource pig.

I'm working at a new agency.... it's all digital.. and they use fireworks for everything. Seem kinda cool... But I dunno... You dont really have the same control over type. And its kinda clunky. I kinda hate it.
I guess you can produce the same results in fireworks as you can with photoshop? what do ya'll think.

I used to use it back in 2000 when the interface look was in. I use photoshop now and send it off to get sliced and diced for the web.

1. Detailed control over exported files including PNG colour select and detailed compression controls.
2. Fireworks is both a bitmap AND vector program making it ideal for both layout elements like rectangles and gradients. It's like having the but in the same app! if it's for web/screen only, you will be fine.
3. Fireworks creates the best web ready images vs. ps.
4. Transparent images come out clean and seamless in fw, whereas ps tends to get choppy with transparency.
5. Fireworks handles selecting objects directly on the canvas very well. Photoshop's auto-select sucks so you always have to go to layers to select them.
6. You can comp and design in FW faster than in PS and basic things like instant resizing, rounded corners, bevels, gradients and quick effects are very quick to create.
7. You can work in pages and have master pages too.
8. Export quality to web is smaller and cleaner in most cases than ps.- Thank for this.
I did love a lot of things about fw. Some of the PS usability is poo, like auto select.Hombre_Lobo
- Thank for this.

9. Fireworks' type engine might seem balls to someone coming from PS or Illustrator, but it was meant to emulate type capabilities on the web.

Okay so your saying its better the PS.... so why does everyone use PS?
- not everyone uses PSmonospaced
- Habit, I guess - I work better in PS and Illy and use FW to export. Old/bad habits die hard.detritus
- Also, outside of its really good compression capabilities, I plum hate FW for working in *shrugs*detritus
- So everyone really should be using FW. but because of habits 90% web industry uses PSClaymantis
- Meh, it's just an exporter for me - I don't see why I'd learn a new program that merely dupes two others' efforts. Personally speaking, is all.detritus
- Lots of programs are good for putting together websites, including Illustratormonospaced

When Macromedia still existed, FW fucking rocked to work in. When Adobe took it over, they started neglecting it: not optimising it, not bothering to correct resource usage problems, nerfing its integration with other CS apps.
- That said, I haven't used FW CS6, so I don't know if it's been improved at all.Continuity
- CS6 is much better than CS4, much more stable and fastspot13

If you're using PS /Fireworks, this might be of use:
http://macrabbit.com/slicy/Haven't tried it myself but I've heard positive reports. I use their other app Espresso and it works great.

I use Fireworks pretty exclusively for ux work. I create my wireframe screens and export to PSD for the visual designer to pick up. It's great because I can set up a grid and that carries over to visual.
The downsides...it's still buggy as hell. I'm using CS6 now and it's marginally better than 5 but save your work ALL THE TIME or you'll be sorry. Every time it crashes I send adobe hate mail in the "send a report" form.
- My experience with it was very buggy also. Crashed frequently.d_rek

I use fireworks to recompress my images to a lower weight without a loss of quality, the save for web in ff in a lot better than the one in photoshop, my2ct

Best program for web and application design. Makes Photoshop look stupidly clunky when you get used to it.
Make sure you install this
