Going there next month - any suggestions for food or things to see or do?

LA or Italy? Either way I've never been to any of those places so the only advice I can give you is, bring your camera, you'll probably need it to take nice pictures.

You know what... I debated whether I would specify LA or Italy.

I'm going to bet he means Italy.
Definitely check out at least a few of the 3 million churches and cathedrals. The guggenheim's good but small, if you like a certain period of modern art...20-40s-ish.
Just mainly walking around and getting extremely lost in all the tiny streets is great fun. Photography there is a blast.Sadly I think you've missed the architecture biennale, and the art one doesn't start until june.
Lots of great seafood there to eat. The Rialto market is pretty fun for looking at all kinds of weird seafood, lots of it still alive.

Just keep walking, as much as you can. Stay out of the tourist areas. Go out walking in the very early hours (dawn) before it gets crowded. Or in the middle of the night. It's amazing. You might get some mist etc. very, very atmospheric and the best way to see the city. The Punta della Dogana is a must-visit if you dig modern art. Avoid all the glass shops and tourist traps. Some amazing restaurants, incredible food. I'm very envious, it's an incredible place.
- Sorry I've not been more specific on the restaurants. I'll rack my brain to see if I can remember stand-outs.eoin

I think there's some kind of secret tomb beneath the library where the body of some ancient knight rests. Maybe you could take a look.

Dunno if that will still be going by the time you get there though.

Venice, Florida? I grew up there. I suggest you don't go.

Buy some of the handmade sketchbooks. I lived not far from Venice for a few months way back when and thought I wouldn't care, but I really wish I had bought a box of them.
Get some good masks, too. Things you think you could find elsewhere, but really, you can't, not like there.
Glass - if you got the bucks, get some great hand blown glass shipped back. If not, buy some of the trinkets, you still can't get those elsewhere.

thanks buds.
Yeah, was supposed to go to rome, but the planning for that got all fucked up so picked Venice instead.
So wandering, photoing, and eating all top the list. I can do that.
