The best thing they did was make it PC based. The PS3 had/has soooo much potential, yet development for it was difficult, by comparison, when XBox and PC games were so similar. At the end of the day, PS3 was usually last in the dev cycle for non-exclusives and they used tools that ported the PC or XBox version (often poorly) meaning equal or reduced graphics and performance on a more powerful platform.

developer-type guy from reddit:
"From the sounds of it they're going to use an AMD 8 core bulldozer with a 7850 on chip fusion product"
his whole post is interesting, actually:
"It seemed more like the full version was aimed at developers than consumers. From the sounds of it they're going to use an AMD 8 core bulldozer with a 7850 on chip fusion product (which is fine), but once that goes to globalfoundries they aren't going to be able to keep it secret. So they may as well do a quick announcement, make sure developers are all on the same page, and work from there. It means the PS4 is basically a top end gaming laptop. They may as well put ubuntu on it and call it a PC at this point. Thats important for those of us who aren't in the know with their secret plans but may still want to do a PS4 release. It means the computers we've built and been targeting for next gen are... fine. Not a lot of 8 core CPU's floating around these days but a 6 core intel will be 'close enough' for indie teams.
From E3 to christmas really isn't long enough to get a game optimized and ready. This gives them enough time to give developers a clue what they're going to work with, and squash any crazy rumours, and it gives us a few things to target if we want a PS3 release. It means we can develop on regular PC's and don't need a dozen development kits RIGHT NOW.
One of the questions those of us who aren't in the know had was what architecture they were going with. Sony could have gone with something like an 8 or 12 core ARM with some wacky Qualcomm GPU or a Tegra part or ... some custom architecture that would just make life hard. Basically they could have just taken the PSVita and made more of it, which would be ok, or they could have gone Cell 2.0 and that would have been... troublesome. Or they could have gone somewhere really strange with god knows what.
Going ARM wouldn't be a problem particularly, but it would mean we would need a dev kit ASAP to make anything that takes full advantage of the system.
Everything they said was very interesting because it was very boring. They're not going off the deep end of crazy on their hardware this time, which is boring, but a huge stress reliever. Games, that can wait until E3 when consumers are there with some expectations."
- This makes sense - I figured the next gens would havwe to do something particularly epic in the GPU dep't.detritus

Assembling a similar PC with the PS4 specs while an interesting exercise doesn't really makes for an argument of which is better than the other.
I used to build my own PCs back in the day and now I just play on consoles. If you build a PC with the same specs as the PS4 I'm pretty sure it will cost more and it won't last you the same years as the console (ability of playing current games wise).
A console developer gets to deal with the same hardware for about 7 years and they learn how to take advantage of most of it by the end of its cycle. Take a launch PS2 for example like Ridge Racer V and compare it with the last God of War for PS2. Same thing on the 360, just compare Halo 3 with Halo 4. A 7 year old PC will let you play on the lowest quality the newer games.
Each have their own advantages/disadvantages, me I prefer to spend a few hundreds bucks on a console and not having to deal with Windows, fucking display drivers, malware and all that shit.

as far as backwards compatibility is concerned, it seems like a bummer, but all those PS1,2,3 will be available for streaming at some point. hopefully under some kind of subscription service instead of per game...
- Does it not play old discs?monospaced
- correct, like the ps3 nowscarabin
- well that's just shitty, my Wii plays old GameCube mini discs just finemonospaced
- stick to wii thenscarabin
- honestly, i don't even use game disks anymore unless i have to and then it just feels weird and archaicscarabin

with the power of the gaikai server farm behind it, including the promising level of integration shown tonight, you can't really compare the potential output of the PS4 to a single PC, but would have to compare it to an incredibly powerful server farm.
the impressive (and proprietary) hardware specs of the box itself is just icing on the cake
he tried to stress that the importance of hardware in the box would be obsolete with the PS4...

Anyone know what a comparative PC system would be, especially in the GPU department? I'm not looking to fan a flame war, just curious to know how much oomph it's got - it's kind of hard to tell from a CGI setpiece and a slow-running urban thing.
- A comparative PC for around the same cost would be the valid measurement, but we don't know the cost yet.nikdaum
- dunno, i imagine they'll get a GPU bulk discount, be planning x months ahead and PCs have a lot of extra stuff a console doesn't - plus Sony will be subsidising it.detritus

it's got more power, more features. integration has been thought out more. that's all you can really ask for, and they delivered. developers now have more at their disposal to work with while crafting experiences for us...
it's up to them now
- I can ask for more. How about a new controller? A dumb touchpad is useless.CygnusZero4
- it's not useless on the vita. again, that's up for developers to work into their games. sony just opened that ability to us on the console finally.scarabin
- console finally.scarabin
- I have a Vita. It's lame. It simply works as an L/R2 in most games. This one is on the front!CygnusZero4
- What was the real need for that? Is it going to change the way I play games? Nope.CygnusZero4
- Ive made up my mind, Im just sticking with the Wii U. At least Nintendo tried to do something new.CygnusZero4
- And I really do love the Wii U gamepad. It genuinely feels different.CygnusZero4

really miss backwards compatibility
I just want to play Outrun 2006 and Gradius V with a wireless controller
- Aye, have to dig out my old PS2 if I want to play my GradiusV.pang
- most should become available for streaming. might have to pay for them again thoughscarabin
- Can't stream SHMUPS, lag would make them unplayableanimatedgif

Think Sony missing out on making it backwards compatible.
Yeah, people can re-buy and download PS1,2,3 games. But how can people afford it after buying a new PS4 (stats comparable to high-end PC), extra controllers, games at £50 a pop...
It's an expensive game! (excuse the pun).

A cool feature using Gaikia is going to your friends list and actually SEE what your friend is doing in-game, that's pretty neat.
The console is also constantly recording what's on screen so you can share on FB/ustream.

some of the demos today reminded me of the feeling i had waaaay back when we were being wowed by the next-level awesomeness of the PS2...
specifically i remember seeing the kessen demo as it was a launch title that was meant to blow minds... if i recall it was all about the PS2 finally allowing for hundreds of random things to be happening at once in a scene thanks to the raw power. anyway i remember kessen melting my face, and i got it right away of course, one of my first games for it.
- I bought the PS2 on launch and though Kessen was a gigantic turd (yes I bought the thing)ernexbcn
- If you had a Dreamcast and bought a PS2 on launch you were going to be disappointed a LOTernexbcn
- PS2 took over a year after launch to be decent, Dreamcast was killed by Sony hype machine with PS2ernexbcn
- yes dreamcast was the shit, still have it and play jet set, crazy taxi, etc.. that says something.prophetone
- and yeah kessen was a bummer after about 10 minsprophetone

As I get older I value the multiplayer experience of video games less and less, mostly due to the fact that I have a family now and can't stay up till the wee hours of the morning, cussing like an irish-man at 12 year olds through my xbox headset. And the majority of my friends are all generally casual gamers as well.
To be honest I much prefer a good single player game these days. I can pause it when the wife starts to get pissed, or the daughter is crying, and generally play when it's convenient for me.
- this is very true. i feel the same and i have friends who are in the same depressing, lame old man situation.prophetone
- it's the circle of life. look at all the social stuff they are baking in the this now. my 6 year old will game in new ways eventually.prophetone
- and i will be a sad, empty hull of what i once was, gripping tightly onto my 80/90's arcade memories and my super famicom.prophetone
