What do you want to "serve" from your home cloud? I guess I do this at home with my Apple TV for my music and video needs, but everything else is in the regular cloud.

I'm very tired of things being called "cloud" when they're the same thing they always were. 5 years ago when you accessed files from different devices or locations, they were simply stored on a server and everyone understood that you could get at them over the Internet. Now, that thing is called "the cloud" and it's nothing new.
They're talking about this at work constantly, "moving to the cloud" "hosting stuff in the cloud." Bottom line: it's still on a fucking server somewhere, with multiple ways to get at it. Nothing new for the most part.
- yeah but its in the Cloud404

There's isn't really such thing as a 'home' cloud. You're referring to a NAS setup such as FreeNAS, which isn't exactly the same. The difference is a cloud outside of your home will most likely be backed up on several servers when using a provider, so in the event your home gets broken into, or a fire breaks out, your files are in tact elsewhere.

I'm not sure about this being called a 'cloud server' (I've got a feeling that's just wanky techno speak anyway), but I've got a QNAN NAS drive in my home.
I've got one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/QNAP-TS-…It's got two bays for the hard drives and works like a dream.
– It'll work as the location for Time Machine back-ups
– I run my iTunes of it and it'll stream to media streaming devices even when I don't have a computer on (I have an Apple TV and a Cambridge Audio streamer as part of my hi-fi which means I can get all my digital music through my main hi-fi)
– If required you can use it as a web server to run sites from
– it works as a files server if you have more than one computer in your home

Ok, so lets say good old server. I would like to set up a server that is accessible from laptops, desktop, iPads, iPhones, iPods. I want it to be able to sync with the iPads, iPhones, iPods for all the pictures and videos the kids take.
- I'm not sure how to make it sync, you'd have to ask someone else. But you can certainly access setup your NAS to be accessed from practically any device these days.twooh

- Syncing will become obsolete as bandwidth improves. The problem is also having adequate spacetwooh

if this is all about syncing your iOS devices, it all relies on an iTunes account being the same for all their devices, and that's probably not ever going to happen

I bought a Lacie 3TB Cloudbox. So far it's been great. I wanted a drive to place music, photos, and movies and be able to access them from iPhone, iPad and iMac. Additionally, it works as a time machine backup, I access files from anywhere (other computers through your browser, and a iOS app). Even my Blu-Ray player recognizes it and can access the media. I've not always been a great fan of LaCie but for the price it's been worth it. Pretty easy set-up for the off wi-fi access too.

These would work for your needs, plus access all files remotely through wifi:
Western My Book Live Duo 4TB
Seagate GoFlex Home
Might have to get one of these.
