All of recruiters take a cut but CC is the biggest cons of all the creative industry. Avoid them at all costs. I've heard they pay freelance $30-$40 per hour and bill the client $100-$120 per hour. They spam email for talent and blast tons of candidates at gigs until one sticks. They own you once you sign a contract with them it takes 1 year to get off their "list". So ask to get off their list asap. I had to ask them numerous times before they would take me off their spam emails. I believe there are some negative reviews on the web about their practices as well... I call them Creative Circle Jerks.
Sign up with Update Graphics, Solomon Page and TTS. They are fair and local in NYC. Solomon Page is on a roll right now.
- standard recruitment company stuff from my experience. don't single one out.fadein11

make a personal connection with smaller creative talent search places. you'll get more personal attention and quality leads.
imo, big freeze on higher level creative hires (cd's, ad's), hiring more juniors and the like.

fadein11, I'm not sure if you work in a big or small market but NYC has plenty of recruiter options, why settle. I like to give advice to my fellow creatives so that they avoid jerks and get the most they can for their experience. All mid to senior creatives should be getting from $50 to $125 per hour in NYC. As a group, if we can keep a higher rate, everyone benefits.
But don't let me be the one to single them out, if people bother to look for reviews they will find CC is an nation wide franchise and seems to be the MOST controversial of the creative recruitment firms. Even agencies try to avoid them because CC has some pretty mean lawyers.

Go out and meet people.

I have met with a handful of recruiters in NYC and to be honest, Creative Circle has given me a handful of jobs. When I first started out, they were very helpful with getting me work. I don't use them as much now as I have made contacts with other studios/agencies/etc on my own. I have also used 24/7, Held and Lloyd and Kay and Black.
Good luck with your search. There are plenty of freelance opportunities out there.

Avoid Creative Circle.
