So about 9 months ago I created a special landing page vying for a position with Hoefler & Frere-Jones. It worked, and I'm now happily front-ending with the company of my dreams. However, since moving here my husband hasn't been able to land the job of his dreams, so I figured we'd try the same avenue for him and see what comes of it. He's no front-end developer so it may not work quite the same, but there is surely no harm in trying.
So, he shot a short lo-fi video and I made a landing page for him yesterday (using the new Tungsten Narrow web fonts, thanks to my new job ). We've just sent it out to DonorsChoose.org via email, Twitter, and their online application form. With any luck this will work, but if not we have a decent little template to woo prospective future employers.
Take a peek!

Sidenote: I can't help but think there is a business somewhere in this. With both landing pages (mine and his) I've had friends and acquaintances ask if I could make one for them. Of course the target audience is jobless people with no money, so I'm not sure how it could work...
Either way, if you have the talent and ability to put something like this together for yourself when looking for work I highly recommend it. It worked wonders for me.

This was that site that only rendered correctly on a mac with the fonts installed correctly, right? So what about it?

for some reason the vid keeps freezing along with the page :-(
But thats a really nice idea!

Any other problems with the video? I re-optimized and shrunk it down pretty significantly.

9 months in and it's still your dream job. Impressive.
I agree with hektor ... it's a nice idea. I'll give it a try

Maybe a joke would be a good way to start a video like this. Some 30 seconds of stand up comedy! Because making videos and sending it with your resume seems a bit creepy to me. Especially if you're not a girl, because girls can get away with making videos, so long as they are pretty. The porn industry, and the rest of hollywood can vouch for that. Also the beard has to go! I was going to kick and throw my computer to the floor the moment I saw that beard.

at first I was "what is this bullshit?"
then i watched the video and now i'm thinking someone should hire this nice man.

Nice presentation, and surely nicer than just anonymously applying or sending an email. I would've tightened up the ins and outs of the video, but that's just me. Like when he finishes speaking, I would've cut to a board sooner. But good approach, and good luck to Michael.

omg has a good point.
not everyone has the ability to do this.
it is DEFINITELY a privilege + he's a good looking guy...

This is a great idea. I've been toying with doing something like this but more of a motion graphic representation of my history without showing me.

Okay, so clearly all of the negatron, flaming QBNers take a break on the weekends and the sweet ones start posting. Thanks everyone! Great feedback. Really appreciate it.
We're making another page as we speak for a different job. :)
On a side note I've had offers from friends to help make something like this for them and I just don't feel right doing it. This can only really work if it comes from you. So, instead I'm going to write a general how-to on this as my first post for an upcoming blog.
If there is anything you guys would like to see included in that post, please let me know!

Pretty cool idea. Your husband looks like a nice fella!
Its a nice way to communicate the passion for a certain kind of job.

Thank your bosses for the awesome fonts they make ;)
