I really liked it.
Saw it in 24fps.Most people will draw comparisons - intentionally or not - to the Lord of The Rings movies. They're going to compare this one movie to three movies and about a decade of nostalgia and warm, fuzzy memories.
Looking forward to the next two movies.
If you're able to look at this movie as an individual movie - and not one in a canon - I think you'd place it above most of the drivel that comes out. Just my thoughts.- agreed. although I saw it 48fps 3D on a massive screen.Amicus

I really enjoyed it. 3 hours passed by without getting bored.
looking forward to the rest. I actually like that it's not full on pace with the whole story compressed in 3 hours, this let's the story breathe better as it's a long adventure with lots of little stuff happening along the way.

I enjoyed it (saw it a 24fps) - visually it was stunning. The only issue I have is similar to my thoughts on LOTR.
If those huge fucking birds can swoop in a carry them to their destinations, why all the fucking walking? Have the bird drop you off where you're going. I would have been pissed when those birds dropped me on top of a far away mountain top and not take me the extra 30min flight over to the destination.
I mean, in LOTR, they swooped in at the end and picked them up DIRECTLY on top of Mt. Doom.
Oh well, would have been a short, drama-free movie otherwise.
- heh, i do this with every kind of movie - Looper: "why not just send them back in time to when the Earth was...detritus
- ...6 months around the sun, just dumping them in Space?".detritus
- Looper q: when they began to maul that poor guy, why didn't all his life change? How did he end up in the same street?shaft
- I'm not talking about this time travel shit.. otherwise we'll be here all day making diagrams with straws and shit! :)detritus
- Maybe the birds are treating Smaug with the deference and caution he deservesBrokenHD
- lol, BrokenHD. Thank you for thatidentity
- Maybe the eagles are just assholes like cats. And they rarely do what you want.ETM
- For LotR, maybe they wouldn't go anywhere near Mordor until the ring was gone along with Sauron's power.ETM

I felt like they overused the CGI in this movie. In LOTR you had huge battle scenes, but there was some restraint in the depiction of characters (orcs all being played by real people for example). Here it was like they just threw all restraint out the window and did everything with computers. The problem is that as good as studios have gotten with this stuff, it still doesn't look real to me. The white orc, goblin king, etc...looked like characters from a video game. Compare this with something like Pan's Labyrinth where they used mostly costumes and animatronics...the characters in that movie were far more convincing and scary.
- Yeah these crazy CGI movies worked for me in the late 90s and 2000's, not anymore though.CygnusZero4
- It actually almost felt dated to me because the trend now is practical effects as much as possible.CygnusZero4
- This movie is such a huge CGI fest, felt like it should have come out 10 years ago.CygnusZero4

i don't remember anything about storm giants in the book. or galadriel. or any of the thorin/orc guy beef.
but then i haven't read it since i was 9
- Stone giants were in there. Galadriel was not. Goblin guy (Azog) was mentioned briefly, but had a different role and died before book began.tcmmct
- Theyre trying to take 1 book and spread it across 3 movies, there's stuff added and other things handled differently.CygnusZero4

white orc was a dude in a suit.

I enjoyed it. But it wasn't a good film. Completely missed the point of what makes The Hobbit what it is.

I really enjoyed The Hobbit. The production is so through the roof it's easy to forgive some of the small things that get lost in translation with these movies.
Go see the movie, relax, enjoy yourself and try to remember why you like movies like this in the first place - because they're magical and do such a good job of taking you out of the everyday and into a wonderful new world that you're lucky movies like this are made at all.

I'm kind of mixed on it. We watched it last month I think and I thought I'd be more into it. I sort of felt like it was too amusing in contrast to LOTR, which had seemed more dramatic because of what they were trying to do. The visuals were great, of course. I guess it just didn't have that 100% escapist feel to it like LOTR does; I can watch any of those movies and completely tune the world out.

I agree with both of you. It was perfectly fun and entertaining. But it almost immediately left my mind afterwards. I am by no means a fanatic tho. So, there's that.

It was crap.

Someone says something dire and prophetic.
Running.
Sword fights.
Pulls back bow.
Camp laughing.
Big monster comes close to camera, goes 'rawr'.
Falling.
Someone says something dire and prophetic.
The end.- Thats 99 percent of all movies. Except fast and furious...those movies are for assholes.marychain
