Planning a trip to LA for 2 weeks in Jan, my sister lives there but she's working and i've never been (well not since i was 5). From Europe.
Could spend 3 weeks and work from there for a week, but is it worth spending over 10 days there? I get a lot of mixed reviews.
Also if there's anywhere reaaaally greaaaat, please share. Thanks :)

Really depends on what you like to do on your free time, but you better have a car, cos everything in LA is miles away.
Santa Monica and Long Beach are nice places to hangout.
My experience in LA:
1st time - hated it
2nd time - loved it
3rd time - wanted to live there

what do you enjoy and who do you like to interact with. white people, black people, asian people, mixed people? la can be quite segregated

Try not to fly into LAX. Bob Hope is better.
Places:
-La Brea tar pits
-Queen Mary
-Catalina Express- whats wrong with LAX? didnt have any problems.sureshot
- Exactly! Quick in and out, no 405 bullshit.ArmandoEstrada
- It's just a trashy mess of an airport.nikdaum
- not going to live at the airport. dont care. in and out. free wifi.ArmandoEstrada
- I live by LAX so it makes sense for me but flying into Bob Hope is clutch if u live on the east side. Like flying into La Guardia in Brooklyn.shellie

Have some Calamari at Bubba Gump Shrimp on the Santa Monica Pier.

Take the 'Dearly Departed Tour'. This guy Scott drives you around to all the places famous people have died.

Griffith Park is cool and has nice views of the smog. Plus, you can explore an abandoned zoo: http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-old-…
- make sure to bring food to the abandoned zoo so you can have a picnic therescarabin

Be prepared for rain or cold weather. I love going by Hollywood and highland in January seeing all the tourists in shorts t-shirts and flip flops when it's 45 and raining.
As stated above a car is a must.
Eat at a hole in the wall Mexican spot. Prepare to pay for it later. Check out the food trucks scene. Griffith park, go for a hike or check out planetarium. Go up the coast. Drive to San Diego. Etc etc.

Go to the Farmer's Market for part of the day. Good food, stuff to see, and the Grove is next door for a little shopping and hang out.
Spend time on Venice Beach walking the boardwalk, enjoying the atmosphere, seeing the cool people and skaters and smoke a doobie.
Go to the taping of a show?

Had a good Sunday afternoon at the Rose Bowl Flea Market

Griffin Park was good to get my bearings of the City.
But, most of my time spent in LA I was always around Venice. It's a cool area - bars, restaurants & shops. And, people walk around there!! But that was 2 years ago.
Go for a cruise up the PCH... Great scenery.

There is plenty to do in LA in surrounding areas. For attractions, I would check out the Griffith observatory as stated above, and also the Getty Museum. I would venture over to Old Town Pasadena and then see the Norton Simon museum. If you can, go see a LAker or Clippers game, its worth the money to see the spectacle of LA Basketball.
Food wise- You gotta have an In N Out burger, theres a popular one on Sunset next to Hollywood High. Toast is a cool spot for lunch and celebrity sightings if thats your thing. There are also a bunch of spots to eat on the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade. Also a great spot for people watching. While you're there, stop by the Santa Monica pier.
For cool shopping, check out La Brea Avenue, Fairfax, Robertson, the Grove(Farmers Market) or the Beverly Center.

Go to Arsenio Hall's house for a backyard BBQ.
OR go throw water balloons at Tom Cruises house. He lives on Calle Vista Dr. in Beverly Hills.

-The Last Bookstore in downtown is an awesome independent book store and has a huge, maze-like and full of art/decoration $1 section where you could get lost for hours. Plenty of restaurants, art galleries, and bars in the area too.
-Hit up Opening Ceremony on La Cienega Bl for the hippest of high fashion.
-Amoeba records (On Sunset Bl) is one of the best record stores anywhere. Then head across the street to Hennesy & Ingalls book store for amazing design (and art) books.
-If you want bomb Mexican food in LA you gotta go to a food truck, most of the shops aren't up to par in my experience. Taco Zone in Echo Park (by the Vons) is awesome or the el Pastor tacos from Tacos Leo (usually on Venice Bl) are the dankest ever. Also amazing is Ricky's Fish Tacos (not actually a truck, more a stand) on Virgil (across from another Vons) in Hollywood.
-Dim Sum at Empress Pavilion in Chinatown is great, and you can walk around the area afterwards. Besides the general Chinatown shops, and right near each other you can find Ooga Booga and Flock Shop, two cool art/design related boutiques. There are some galleries in the area too.
