There is plenty to do in LA in surrounding areas. For attractions, I would check out the Griffith observatory as stated above, and also the Getty Museum. I would venture over to Old Town Pasadena and then see the Norton Simon museum. If you can, go see a LAker or Clippers game, its worth the money to see the spectacle of LA Basketball.
Food wise- You gotta have an In N Out burger, theres a popular one on Sunset next to Hollywood High. Toast is a cool spot for lunch and celebrity sightings if thats your thing. There are also a bunch of spots to eat on the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade. Also a great spot for people watching. While you're there, stop by the Santa Monica pier.
For cool shopping, check out La Brea Avenue, Fairfax, Robertson, the Grove(Farmers Market) or the Beverly Center.
