depends on what you are shooting..
i ahve the 24-70 L and its awesome.. heavy but awesome..
then a few months back i got the 16-35 L and its kind of stolen the spotlight from the 24-70 for me.. both as its lighter, but also wider.. which is nice..they both make awesome pictures..
I use them on a 7d..
I did try them out on my friends 5D a few weeks back and the 24-70 all of a sudden became much more range friendly..
and the 16-35 was even more awesome.. but would probably slide back into second place for day to day favorite..

my brother in law just got the 17-40.. and he loves it.. but yep, its f4.. so.. not that great unless well lit..
- I had the 17-40, it's a bit limites for a walkabout.seeessess

Just to throw a suggestion in. I just got the RX100 Sony. I hate Sony cameras but it's excellent, as a walk round. Image quality is great. Saves lugging a 7D too, and cheaper than a decent lens.

I agree with @craigatkinson... the RX100 got great reviews by actual photographers.... bring that and the 7D with 50mm and you've got the best of both worlds..... and it's great to travel with something in the pocket rather than that DSLR albatross around your neck all the time...

I'm no photographer but I have played with the 17-40 f4L and it felt great... But like you say, not great for indoor/dark.
If budget isn't an issue how about the 24-70 2.8L?
Hmmm
- too big.pango
- correction... boarder line size if you don't put on the hood... he did mention he wants a walk around lens.pango
- not wide enough on cropped sensor and to slow for meHijoDMaite
- 2.8 slow? stick with prime thenpango
- sorry i meant f4HijoDMaite

to not be a troll, i would say you need to widen your lens range. get something much more broad, and even consider a zoom.
if you can afford it, get a canon l series with a wide range and a small f...if you don't want to cough up the enormous cash for the l, grab something in the 28-200 field of an off-brand. you can get plenty of great lenses in that range for far cheaper than an l series canon.

Try them all out in the store?
That said get the 17-40, or 17-55 if you can afford it.
- i've tried them all yes, 17-55 is suppose to have dust issues..HijoDMaite

i am hesitant to start with 24mm since my cropped sensor (1.6) really makes it a 40mm. Then I have nothing wide for landscapes. Maybe I need to buy a prime wide I don't know.

I'd get a nice 35mm and be done with it. 50mm + 35mm and you're set 90% of the time for travel/street photog. Unless you want to take pictures of wildlife.
- yeah the 35mm 1.4 is really niceHijoDMaite
- you like all primes?HijoDMaite
- Yeah, I really don't like zooms. You get far more considered work with primes as well.inteliboy
- i like the sound of thatHijoDMaite
- the canon 28mm f1.8 is great on a crop sensorj_lawson

get that tokina hijo!
- HijoDMaite0
jay im glad you think so have you heard things about it?
I figure if I get it then i am fully covered in the wide range and then I can start at the 16-35mm 2.8
- i know a person that has it and it's great. my widest is 24mm and i wish i had something a little bit wider!jaylarson

So I am traveling with a Canon 7d (1.6 CS), Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II, and the Canon 50mm f/1.4
I hope this is enough for a Travel Photography/Photojournalism adventure for the next 4 months.
My friend sold me her 16-35mm in perfect shape for $850!
- sweet lens, but I'd love a tele of some form..... maybe even a cheaper 70-200 4.5-5.6vaxorcist
