i quite like it.
My only crit is that it looks more American than English
Maybe due to the colour or type. But my first thoughts were that it looks like those hockey logos that are done in a similar style.

A more traditional English style

I like your approach though, it is for an American market after all.

I really like it. It's not typical. It does feel a bit game-like but perhaps cranking up the texture a bit might resolve that. That subtle edge noise gets lost down small and the logo feels a bit too clean. Perhaps adding a bit more texture would resolve this. Nicely done, sir.

Im not really a fan of it. I find it way to busy. Have you tried reproducing it at small sizes? I think it looks good now because you've added in lots of shaded colour effects. Does it still have strength in black and white?
- what makes you think it's even going to be small or in b/w?monospaced
- being a logo, it should work in any format. who knows what the company will want to do with it down the road.desmo

needs to work at the size of a penny.

I read NGI. if you can fix that, you've got yourself a logo, son.
I'd also like to see some simple versions too.. to forget the overlap, forget having the castle vibe above the N and pplay with a few super-simple options. I do like it as is, but if you head in that direction and come back again you'll prob find what you should concentrate more on and what can just be a subtle element

maybe lose the star and use a darker gold for the white highlights?

i agree with spendogg... drop the G and let the gate image represent the gate maybe N-(gate) or, if you keep the G, maybe try it without the castle treatment on top? In general it just feels like there are too many ideas trying to be displayed all at once. But these are minor in my mind - i think it looks pretty sick as is.

Simply avoid the "Design by committee" advice you're receiving here & you'll be golden.

I too am wondering how it looks in one color. But I'll probably be hated on for asking

^ I think this says a lot, and answers the questions about why look at it in a single colour. It looks confused, and the shading/styling simply hides and distracts from that.
I'd look at losing the G – Northgate is one word so it's acceptable to lose G as an initial. I'm no architecture expert but one of the things that springs to mind about all these grand gate/entrances I've seen is their symmetry.
- Good post. I have yet to see a castle with a door that wasn't centered.CanHasQBN

You are telling a story.
But this story has not beginning and no end.
I think it needs more work, but you are going in the right direction. When you said "fast turnaround" that sounds like the clients are a pain in the arse, give them anything and let them learn their lesson.

Seeing it again in black and white does bring it home. I think I got a little over-eager in a tight timeframe. I'll post some studies when I'm able to give this more time, probably over the weekend.
Thanks for all the feedback & help.
