I'm working on a really fast turn around logo project, and looking for some feedback. I feel close, but something feels awkward. Any thoughts?
"NorthGate Brewers"
Here's the gist: New Craft Brewery in Minneapolis. They're named after an english brewery that existed in the 1800's in Chester, England. The Brewery was named after the Roman North Gate (located nearby), which was originally part of Hadrian's wall. They want to make english style session beers at first, and then branch out into other things. They requested a gate, and compass present in the logo somewhere.
My Logic – Gate locks up with G. The NorthStar locks up with the N (bringing it more to minnesota, also forms the requested compass)
Full typography can come later... I also attatched where we're planning on taking the branding, it's rough. But the patchwork gives some good context for colors/etc.

Printing headache.
- Yeah. It's gonna be a challenge.dearhead
- no, that's perfectly fucking fine, it's like 4 colros

Hard to tell with the full time treatment/package design.
Seems like a great concept, execution needs some simplifying...imo

A flat/simplified version would be nice

looks like all the clever ideas were used on one mark - which makes it a bit confusing.
and as per utopian... my first reaction before reading was some sort of mario themed game...

The finish looks great but I don't think the N, G and gate are working well together. It would benefit from better symmetry

if you simplify the mark, maybe the ideas can be incorporated in the pack design.

Cool. Thanks for the thoughts. I'll get to later and post some results.

Sorry, but your solution is in another castle.
- I agree with Chimp, the finish is nice, but the lack of symmetry throws it off. It feels like all of the weight is in theCanHasQBN

- Also, not sure why the N is the only thing in red. I wonder what it would look like if the two blocks on top of the N were red too.CanHasQBN

The style's not really to my liking, but that's by the by — as mentioned, the smallness might get flaky when it comes to repro.
My main beef is the G though ... it's kinda limp - the gate element works well though, set as it is.
Not sure why something outdoor is underlit, unless it's night time.
- can you expand on what you were thinking with the G? Limp how-so?

Thumbs up for the concept, but not the execution. The off-centre gate is a big problem. Maybe detach it from the N and G entirely, put it in the foreground. The turrets are also a bit too thick, they don't match the width used elsewhere.
I like the colour scheme.

The tone is more medieval than Roman. I find it odd that door Escher type. The colors are beautiful. And the red star isn't in the best place.

I think one of the reasons people are having issue with the gate is the disproportionate negative space surrounding it, compared with the relatively open negative space inside and to the right of the G.
Or not. Cool project though.

Drop the g and rebalance the gate

I think it's dope the way it is. Even the star placement. This is definitely original and thought out. And no, a four color logo won't be a nightmare to print.
- Symmetry is BORING, and too many people are telling you to make it like that. Screw that.monospaced

That is a drawing, not a logo.
