I have this bike:

...and if you can get it for this price, I'd go for it. Total bargain!!
Honestly, it's amazing. Super light but with shit hot tech - I got mine for £1275 after my old one got stolen and my insurance co gave me a huge budget to compensate!?

I never understood why people get mt bikes to commute to work on? even if you do use it for mountain your much better off getting a mt. bike and just getting a beater/hybrid to commute with. riding a suspension mt bike to work just plain SUCKS. especially a 26er. if you have rough terrain, dirt on your way to work then get a cross bike with suitable tires.

Hard to find, but if you can pick up a 2010 Rig (29er) would be worth the effort... Fisher sold his brand label in 2011 to present all the bikes are made in China by Schwinn...

i want to get a cheap secondhand to do a custom job... mostly for occasional commuting, easy weekend rides, etc. from this thread i figured i won't try to get a bike for dual purposes... when i have the money i'll buy a proper new bike for mountain/off-road purposes.
which decent (and cheap) secondhand brands should i look at that has good parts (breaks, gear components, etc.) that i can fix up for an urban/commuter bike?
