You're correct, it still has to be line art. I think you're just confusing an "effect" for the actually process of 4c printing.

they screen-printed it. I used to do 4c screen print back in the day while at art school for local punk bands.
You're limited to pretty course screens, though. Which is why the 'rosette' pattern is so pronounced. I usually printed 55 line screens pretty easily. Can sometime push it to 85 and higher if you emulsion is good

registration has to be flawless

when screen printing you can swap out the 4 colours to whatever you want. It doesn't have to be C M Y K, but results will vary but can still look pretty cool. i.e., swap Black for another dark colour, Yellow for another light colour, etc.

brilliant thread.. glad i asked... any tip on bringing textures into illustrator? in thier other poster they bring in wood grains and stuff... are they expanding that or doing something else?
