one of the scientists on the webcast just said this opens up future opportunities to discover "unknown unkowns"...

Gamma gamma is low.
It's off.

Physicist's have been operating on the assumption that the Higgs Boson was there for decades. This just confirms that everything they are doing can be proved.
The big story, I think, is that the Large Hadron Collider is performing really well, getting results faster than they thought.
Other new things will be learned soon.

press conference is over... but damn if that wasn't fascinating... I absolutely LOVE science and physics? :)
... so cool

All those other little particles are parts of the model that explains how electricity and magnetism arise from their aggregation into atoms, and how energy is transferred between them, giving rise to light, xrays, chemistry, biology, etc. Understanding how these elements go together has allowed us to develop technologies that use their principles, like radios, tv, electronics, lasers, radio telescopes, etc. The Higgs Boson is modelled to be the particle which imparts the property of mass to some of the other particles. Mass attracts all other mass, in an infitesimally weak way we call gravity, and is the final and fourth force we know of - the other three - the strong nuclear, the weak nuclear and the electromagnetic all being accounted for by the standard model of currently known bosons and fermions. Thus once we understand how to model and manipulate the properties of the higgs boson, then we can build technologies that can manipulate mass, hence gravity, and according to relativity, time. Now's the time to just start thinking about what we might be able to engineer matter to do considering the vast implications that something as simple as the 'discovery' of the nature of the electron has had on what we can with stuff we dig out of the ground, and what other exploratory and revelatory tools we have created, from the Hubble Telescope to pacemakers.

- thanks miko :)georgesIII
- I will say that this is what is hoped the higgs boson turns out to be. Gravity might not be explained by it alone/at all.mikotondria3
- But fundamentally it's the dawn of a new era of technology and mastery of another basic natural force.mikotondria3

- Totally serious. I want that shits before I die....twooh
- you really want another dimension added to the mix when many people can't handle 2D when driving?Amicus
- you drive in 2D? dude, you should stay off the road if you only see two dimensional. fucking lunatic!lvl_13
- I didn't say to make flying cars for anyone else. Just me...twooh

they should call it the boss particle

Umm. Yeah, but what kind of weapons can we build with this thing? Right? Cough... Right?

- well this makes everything crystal clear.inv
- It means a Higgs boson can do whatever the hell it wantskeewee

so for george, and everyone else who also likes to understand things in it's most basic form (including myself)... everything in the universe consists of atoms, made up of smaller particles. up until tuesday, scientists have been able to identify all off the particles that make up everything in the universe, except for the particle that gives everything mass... the higgs boson particle does that... and yesterday, the scientists at cern announced that they have been able to recreate/observe/define this particle with 99% certainty...
(in the last section of miko's explanation he states what this discovery means to scientists)

I hear they're making the Prince symbol the symbol for it because Higgs is a fan.
