A spokesman for Yell said the group had been looking for "an identity to tell our story ... we are positioning the company to be 'connecting communities'" and that the name "is standing for the people who make communities thrive". However, he admitted the new name did not derive from anything related to that sentiment.

I have literally no idea how an irrelevant, made up name tells more of the Yellow Pages company's story than the word 'Yell' coupled with the walking fingers motif on yellow.
Still, someone got to spend some money, someone else got to make some - and so the world goes 'round.

I like this... from this http://stuartsmithsblog.com/tag/…
Mike Pocock, Yell’s chief executive, claims to have a cunning plan. He’s actually proud of the fact that hibu (unlike its predecessor, Yell) is a meaningless word. Yes, readers, unironically he spells it out for us: “high-boo”. As opposed to “low-boo.”
Apparently, trendily ungrammatical hibu (lower case ‘h’, with some meaningless umlauts thrown in) is going to “connect” with under-25 year olds for whom telephone directories are relics.
What was wrong with calling it yellow pages?
Retro is in these days.

Well I suppose this is their way of publicly declaring 'We have no idea how to turn our dwindling business around'.
"Hmm, it appears our usage is falling drastically with better localised services provided by Google and arguably superior phone services such as 118. What do you propose we do?"
"I think we should change our name so we also lose our older demographic who still use our service because they struggle to adapt to change."

is HIBU a japanese word or phrase?
- ukit20
I think it's a piece of clothing worn by Muslim women

I thought it was a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five.

Owl in French is hibou (e-boo), but this is "high-boo"? Lame.

"As the group's chief executive told the Evening Standard, Yahoo and Google came from nowhere, and they are now big brands, with Google ranked third in the annual Brandz survey by market research firm Millward Brown. So maybe in a few years time we will all be talking about "hibuing a number".
Nothing like wishful thinking, eh?
What a shite rename/rebrand. Everyone knows Yell & Yellow Pages.
The thing is though that they know that the online offering from them is pish. All it needed was a new website and marketing campaign.

...also when settling on a made up name be sure to pick one that one that no one can determine how to pronounce.
Hee-boo? Hih-boo? High boo?
