Cutting the image into layers and offsetting them would be the easiest way. Could do it a bunch of other ways with displacement maps and the like.
Basically it's like taking a photo of a 3D surface with 2 cameras side by side

...or you can wait about 6 months for someone to ape the technique, turn it into an iPhone app (or three), and offer it for free. Not trying to be snarky, just seems to be the trend when something arises as the bee's knees.
- this is an old technique used a lot on photos - hundreds of em on fffoundfadein11
- It's actually the same technique as any 3D film, just jumping between the two frames instead of sending each to a different eyeanimatedgif

- Understood. Who doesn't love a lil stereographic wiggle? Apologies...hellobotto
- ...just annoyed by of late by shortcut filtography apps.hellobotto

First, I'm not sure if the subject of filtography has been batted around by QBN folks, so my apologies for hijacking the thread. Second, @fredddddd, best of luck with your exploration of stereographic fun, and nice succinct response from @animatedgif.
@mikotondria3 ...so I'm checking out Flixel (similar to cinemagr.am) the other day, and while I appreciate them noting, "Inspired by Cinemagraphs," it left me with a beige vibe. The folks behind Cinemagraphs put time/effort into developing (crafting) something nifty, and now there are apps (convenience) which offer a similar result.
It would be wrong of me to shake my fist at the app developers because they are providing a convenient method of achieving results that a broad group can now create and enjoy. And it's hypocritical of me to complain because I utilize software on daily basis to replicate complex effects.
But I suppose I get annoyed by the ever-narrowing time window these days between when a crafted item hits the scene and when the first replication device is made available. That narrowing cuts down on the time to appreciate the original craft, and it potentially kneecaps curiosity from folks like @fredddddd. For me, it's a rock and a hard place because I enjoy the novelty, but I also appreciate the access for all.
I dunno. Punches for me for being a grump I guess.

I suppose you typed that message in using punchcards on a mainframe? Using a keyboard is so trendy and passé. Technology grows. If you think a computer program can simulate an artistic eye, you are mistaken. The only thing the apps are doing is 'standardizing/automating a process'. If the final results are aesthetically pleasing, who gives a shit how it was done? Its like complaining that a beautiful art print is less appealing because part of it was painted digitally using photoshop. Purist elitism bullshit. We're not alive long enough for that kinda shit man.

- i dont know how many instagram pics are being printed in national magazines..mantrakid

I saw a series of these within the last few days but I lost it. Great work. I'd love to do this in Cinema 4D with toon/sketch shaders. You would have so much control.
