"unpaid internships can fuck off"
Depends on the quality of the intern. If they're good fair enough. If their green, why would i pay them to spend months training so they can build their portfolio and go and get a job somewhere else?
If you've just spent 19 years in education, what's another 3 months on top?

^ and if they are green they can still do some junior work that's for sure without any guidance

I was an unpaid intern for 18 months. I know that sounds crazy but I got fuck-load of PAID freelance work through a few of the staffers there. Not to mention I learned HOW SHIT WAS DONE, which in my opinion, was well worth my time. Never did get hired though, bastards....

unpaid internships undervalue the work of designers and suggest that design is be cheap and exploitative.
also, it perpetuate an eliteness in the industry because it's often the rich kids that can do it.

We always have 2 interns at any one time. There is a waiting list stretching through to 2013 now. We interview lots after they graduate and pick the best ones. We pay our interns per week.
Obviously with turnaround of 2 interns per month/6 weeks, we can't hire them all. No design company hires 2 new junior designers every month. But with so many coming through the studio, it becomes pretty obvious when one shines. When they do, we hire them.Lesson: try really hard, make the effort during your internship and you may very well get hired. If not, you still might get some freelance work, or a referral to another agency. Remember that people who work in agencies are well connected with other agencies!
