From a Yahoo Answers page
Q. 'Einstein: "The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources." Is this a wise piece of advice?'

Doctor Why'As with most pithy advice, it depends a lot on how you interpret it.
I am reminded of a saying sometimes attributed to Pablo Picasso: "Good artists borrow; great artists steal." If you ask yourself how that can be true, a way presents itself. A great artist can take an idea that was someone else's and make it so fully better and his own that the original idea looks like the cheap copy.
I think Einstein's quote may have been in the same light. He's saying that a great person isn't someone who has no sources - who derives everything himself - he's one who makes the sources unimportant. Certainly that was true for his own work... he performed no experiments nor invented new kinds of math. But he didn't need to credit those others because he took those existing ideas and used them in a way nobody had before. Pretty much the very definition of creativity.'

33 years after his death, the first significant exhibition of Pablo Picasso's work in South Africa has provoked a furious row after a senior government official accused him of stealing the work of African artists to boost his "flagging talent".
- He ripped his friend I wouldn't be surprised if he ripped others too. Frankly he is over hyped in history books in my opinion.

Work like these I always feel are inspired by artists like Silvia Ji and Audrey Kawasaki, who have very similar painting styles/motifs.
- I don't think you need to worry about your friend's style being taken. If he continues doing good work, he'll be fine.Complexfruit

I decided, it's a rip,
they both paint girls with two eyes,
but some only have one visible, sometimes they even have teeth,
the similarities are killing me,must be a rip

lolthread.

I really don't see this as a rip in any way, just a vaguely similar illustration style.
I've seen loads of illustration in this sort of style. Perhaps your friend isn't as original as you thought.

Neither are original or even that interesting and certainly not even close enough to be a rip.
I doubt Charmaine has even ever seen your friends work.
Thanks for the laughs though, 8/10 good thread would read again

wow this thread really took off!
haha - clearly Erik's ass does not look nearly as good in 5 o'clock lighting. I initially saw the image on ffffound, looked her up and saw that she listed him as one of her influences on more than one online interview. which can be read here (7th question down): http://thespottedfox.com/stuff-w…
I then went to her archive of work and couldn't help see all the things that were striking in similarity (poses, hair styles, pirate ships, sainted-circles behind heads, indian headdresses, tattoos, compositional structures, etc..) It seemed that while she was probably not ripping him off there was a lot to be desired in her diversity of inspiration and sources. So, sorry for angering the Qube Gods - I realize the majority disagree and that's cool. Thanks for the internet smathering :-)

I think she's hands down better than the person who inspired her.
(See Amicus post at top of this page).

hahaha your friend is so fucked, no way can he compete with those action shots

both are talented, both have a style than many many many other artists have these days, both use themes that many many many other artists use these days. Both are talented, her is a COTD, so I declare her the big winner! Sorry.
