I don't mind giving my designer's a lot of freedom as long as they can justify the choices they make. They can't be random choices, they need to tie in and represent something that is important about the subject. The explanation of these choices is very important for clients that think like the title of this thread.

Who are you working for Donald Rumsfeld?
There are known knowns and known unknowns, then there are unknown unknowns. Listen champ *bites into tuna sandwich*, all I know is I scored 4 touchdowns once in a high school football game and I don't like this design.
- wow... I've actually head suits talk like that... the tuna sandwich and football segue is perfectly in character...vaxorcist

I always it's not always what 'you' want, it's what works which is what we're all trying to work towards.

ask them if they want a tuna sandwich. top their ridiculousness

Well, I see that as a good! Knowing what you don't want is an excellent way to position yourself. It also gives the designer more freedom. The alternate situation would be a client telling you everything they want, even if it goes against everything you believe in as a designer. So, stop whining and get working!
