One of the main reasons FB grew this much and people didn't dump it is because they had a solid product and no competition. Now when Google+ is here they are scared. You can see that very obviously with their rapid release of certain features to their network.
It's not just Google. I know personally a few startups who are making Facebook alternatives. It's really only matter of time before one of them gets a pull and takes all the users away from Facebook and all their friends with them.. This is very easy too.. Facebook has made so many bad things but people couldn't switch to anything else. All the new network needs to have is a solid product and to be fresh. Google+ hits both of those spots and integrates into our devices, computers, email, search etc etc.. has much much higher value than Facebook.
Now those who wanted to leave Facebook, will have alternatives and if I go, I'll take at least 100 of my friends to the new network. So will others. If the new network is deemed cool by everyone Facebook is dead because the inertia will make everyone switch to a new fresher social network and Facebook can't do anything to stop that.

In what must be somewhat embarrassing for Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the most followed user on Google+, according to the Google+ Statistics counter. The Facebook CEO has 21,213 followers, compared to the Google CEO at 14,798.

Might want to pay closer attention to Google+...
The integration of their other technologies into the + platform is key. The fact that users will most likely be able to access Gmail, upload images from Android phones or tablets, send maps and other data to other Android users within my + circles, shop, search, blog, read, etc. all within a new "gated community" that strips away all of the bullshit that Facebook offers...is killer.
Google will own us all someday very soon.

Google+ says:
"If you currently have a private profile but you do not wish to make your profile public, you can delete your profile. Or, you can simply do nothing. All private profiles will be deleted after July 31, 2011.”

If you have an account, you can invite anyone. There's a loophole (well not sure if it's a loophole or deliberate). All you need to do is share something with a gmail account. This can be a status update.
If anyone wants me to 'invite' them, shoot over your emails.

Domacle. That worked with tons of people. As far as I can tell it's the ONLY way to invite, actually.

There is honestly no big reason to clamor for invites right now, because within the following weeks everyone will be on Google+ anyway

Can someone explain what the fuck this means?
Are they going to delete my Gmail account if I don't make my profile public? I don't know what the hell is going on. Reminds me of Buzz and how they fucked that up.

i think they are doing this invite thing to make people stupidly interested... when they released buzz nobody gave a shit so now as 'it's complicated to get in' more people want to join...
btw, i've got my invite, but need to read through the privacy policy before start posting stuff in it...
