Seeing reports of estimates of between 1200 and 1500 missing.
For fuck's sake..
My wife is there right now helping our friends pack up stuff to come stay with us - their house was just missed, to the South, but all the trees in their yard went, they've no power or utilities so they're in our basement for the foreseeable future. One of them posted a radar image of about 10 minutes before it hit with the caption 'uh oh', then that's the last we heard of him til he texted they had survived. Wife knows of 1 person who didn't make it. Might be going down later in the week with van full of collected stuffs and returning with a dog to foster for a little while.- you're a good man for helpingRamanisky2
- well, haven't done it yet, mate, but thanks. It's just so close to home...In the first couple of days you'd just get in the way, too.mikotondria3

I just cannot understand why almost everybody builds houses from wood. What's with that? If you're building in tornado alley, use concrete or even brick. Might not be perfect, but at least you'll be left with *something*. What am I missing here?
- check some of the flickr sets of joplin - you can see that brick hasn't helped hardly anyone.mikotondria3
- Even the hospital was damaged pretty severelyRamanisky2

I was reading some stupid shit through drudgereport earlier tonight talking about how disgusting it is (in the words of idiotic right wing morons) that Obama is in England "drinking $1,000 bottles of wine" while America is "torn apart" and criticizing him for not flying right home to do what would amount to little more than surveying the damage. This is called irrational thinking.
On NPR this morning, I heard some disaster responders saying that they WOULD NOT want a high profile official like a governor or president to visit so soon after a disaster like this because it would take too many police resouces for their security and would distract from the immediate search and rescue. This is called rational thinking.
Of course, if he were to fly home immediatly and go there, these same idiots would blast him for taking advantage of a photo-op.
When will they realize that they can't have their shit and eat it too?
- Same assholes that said the Japanese earthquake was God's revenge for Pearl Harbour...adumbratesly
- If not having Obama around means there are 10 more S&R folks, then, well, Obama stay home...adumbratesly

If you're not close enough (in the U.S.) to volunteer on-site, here are a couple links to organizations working in Joplin, MO (http://bit.ly/l0Fjta) and the Southeast (http://ti.me/iSPxM0) that could use help.
