Didn't see it coming, so not really prepared. I have quickly put together a rushed portfolio on krop:
and I mean rushed, will start tidying it up in due course, and have started looking through the main recruitment sites. Has anyone got any 'useful' tips/info they can send this way?

hey... .being laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me.... I regained my sanity, was no longer a domesticated animal tied to a paycheck and an office.....
that said, learning to hunt on your own takes a bit more guts and effort than I expected....

get alerts from any job sites you can. simplyhired.com was a good resource for me when I started looking.

First,
Who had I become? Just another shark in a suit? Two nights later at a conference in miami I had a breakdown. Breakdown? Breakthrough. I couldn't escape one single thought: I hated myself. No,no, here's what it was: I hated my place in the world. I had so much to say and no one to listen. And then, suddenly, it happened. It was the oddest, most out-of-the-ordinary thing. I began writing what they call a mission statement. Not a memo, a mission statement. You know, a suggestion for the future of our company. It was great. Suddenly, I was my father's son again. I was remembering the simple pleasures of this job, how I ended up here out of law school, the way a stadium sounds when one of my clients performs well on the field. I was even remembering the words of the original sports agent, my mentor, the late, great, Dickie Fox who said "The key to this business is personal relationships." And suddenly, it was all very clear. The answer was less money. Fewer clients. Caring about them, caring about ourselves, and the games, too. Starting our lives, really. I'll be the first to admit, what I was writing was somewhat- touchy feely. I didn't care. I had lost the ability to bullshit. It was the me I had always wanted to be.I ran out in the middle of the night to find an all nitght fotomat before i could change my mind. It looked incredible. Even the cover looked like The Catcher in the Rye. I entitled it "The Things We Think and Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business."
Kinkos Employee: That's how you become great, man. Hang your balls out there.
Thanks.

don't sweat it, change is good. use it as an opportunity to move on to something better. Go after a dream job, take a sabbatical, start your own biz...lots of options.
If you need work though just stay busy and start contacting people. Make to do lists and stay on it everyday.

try to make the most of the freedom, don't worry tooooo much about saving as much money as possible and just sitting in a dark room with the blue glow of Facebook and twitter illuminating your face. Treat it as a holiday, or a time to hone those drawing skills or something... but also dedicate a couple of hours to jobhunting each day.

I got Laid off 3 years ago, markets super tough here so I've just been freelancing which is hard work but better than some lame office job.

my husband lost his job suddenly three weeks ago and now he's doing freelance and a lot happier. we've actually kind of enjoyed the thought of only having what we need.
losing his job also meant we couldn't get the house we were in the middle of purchasing and that was a bummer but quickly afterward we both felt really relieved to not have a house payment and be stuck here in dumb old Utah.
it's really difficult but it feels so good to get out of the rat race.
