You probably already read about it, but the government-backed Start-up Britain is advising start-ups to use crowdsourcing. Like, linking directly to 99designs. And you thought this governnment couldn't get worst...
The Post Desk wrote a really good article about it...Worth a read. (I have nothing to do with them).

The UK government themselves are attempting to devalue the industry? Lovely.

Cheapen UK start-ups and weaken the design industry in one go.. shocking but sadly i'm not surprised. Branson endorsing that though, more of a surprise.
i thought you'd all be onto it already but if you missed it, Creative Review also talked about it on their blog.

It's a shame the postdesk article loses some credibility by being so badly written - otherwise it does a pretty good job.

Good read that was, My god that website is a complete waste of fucking time. But does that surprise me from the government, no.

I can't wait for something like the Gap logo fiasco to happen with a crowdsourced logo. I wonder if there's a way we could make that happen? convince American Apparel to choose a really shit logo "crowdsourced" by a few of us and we can basically make the most horrendous piece of shit ever. That way they get publicity and we give the uneducated public a taste of what can happen (and usually does)

Are these guys serious? The website sounds like a joke... What about all that "Silicon Valley and Creativity Energy".

"Whether you've just started or are growing a business, we're helping Britain's future entrepreneurial talent by providing links to the web's best business resources"
..then in the 'ways to prove (whether?) your business will work' section;

Devil's advocate here — this service is for the smallest of Ma & Pa shops and companies who don't have web presencies, nor would likely make a heavy investment for their first foray.
This being the case, is our industry really losing out, or is it, aftyer a fashion, being invested in (no matter if in a form we find repulsive)?
If and when these smaller companies capitalise and feel the benefit of their foray, they'll likely be more inclined to spend better, later.
Otherwise, these people will never be on the internet, so we don't lose out anyway.
.
On the flipside — I've been loathing this campaign since it started and reading here about the coupon book'-like misselling of financial advantages makes me even more angry.
I can see me writing a letter about this...
FIRST WORLD RAGE!

Is such a thing (a website with "deals" for small businesses that you can already get elsewhere) really such a big deal anyway?
In the States if the government published a site like this people would go out of their way to ignore it.

you have to devalue the industry before you create slaves. Great observation Continuity.

After they're done crowdsourcing their design work, they'll outsource production.... that's the Thascist's idea of "job creation"
- vaxorcist0
If only we could get them to croudsource or oursource management....

Continuity... yes, the Govt wants to devalue the industry..... ever since Nevil Brody's Red Wedge, the Tories have seen graphic designers as the enemy....

The most frightening thing about this is that businesses and ordinary people take their cues from government (no matter how anti-government they might be, even in the US); and if the government decide a particular industry should be devalued, then there will be trickle-down effect to the business world.
It's not fun to know the government is the enemy.

Answer: stop your consulting and other services and just go to market with products.
No more crying and the added benefit of no clients.
