Lighting...
Try bouncing some light from the opposite direction of your main light source... and it looks like you using a flash at some point - will flatten any image if used direct on like that (look at her pupils). Try an indirect, diffused approach...
Conveying emotion...
Depressed? She looks like something just did flip flops in her tummy. =] You need to add some context to the image in order to help sell the "message"...

1,6,7... the eyes smiling comment is totally on...
she looks almost interesting.... she seems a bit nervous, but almost there and not there in a way... it's hard to get great headshots from slightly nervous beginning actors... some veteran actors can turn on the charisma in 10 seconds..

1 or 6.
Don't get your hopes up though, she's not exactly the next Famke Janssen.

Good on ya for asking for a critique and then actually being cool with the constructive criticism. huw_cy is the man (or woman). We need more of this.

headshots are often a hard gig... the feeling, interaction has to be right, as well as the light and composition. If she's up for it, you may want to test shoot with her 2 or 3 times, learning more about minor tilts of the chin, how that changes the way cheekbones and other facial features look so much, while you build rapore. After a while the rapore and the mood/interaction is what makes a truly great photo. Some great actors can pull that mood out of a hat, most cannot. Good luck, this is not a common skill, despite so many people who think they can shoot headshots. And thanks also for submitting to our comments....

Go rent a Ring Light Flash, Beauty dish or Soft box.
Light coming from a huge light source will give the subject a nice even exposure.
shooting with natural light really is like playing with luck.

Thanks for all you're comments once again. I think lighting is the thing I'm really missing here, more test shoots and more experimentation required. If only everyone could switch in on like Tobias

Bet SHE would prefer #2 where she looks youngermicrokorg - No.2 just looks like a standard shot that someone would have on facebook thomicrokorg

Surely she's an "actress" and not an "actor"?
- They're all actorsmarychain
- We're not allowed to say 'actress' anymore. People get their knickers in a twist over that, apparently.Continuity
- political correctness nonsense!microkorg

Despite the nice smile in the in #1 of the flickr post, do you guys not think it's a little cliché? I personally prefer the second one.
