Lush Coffee & Tea is too cheap to hire a real logo designer. How do you think their cheap coffee and tea will taste.

Graphic Designer for Lush Coffee & Tea (Vista, CA)

The newest Drive-Thu Coffee and Tea café is opening in Vista, CA on March 10, 2011. Lush Coffee & Tea is the ONLY eco-friendly drive-thru coffee & tea spot in Vista! We need your help!

    ~Logo Design Contest~

Okay, so we got this idea from 99designs.com! It's so exciting! We are looking for the best logo for Lush Coffee & Tea, and from this, we will pick the person or firm who will take the contract for our design needs. Please note that if you like us after exchanging emails/phone calls, and we like your work, you can submit a logo design. First, see if you like us by reading more, and then let us know the following before you submit a logo design by email: 1) Your name and contact information. 2) A few words to introduce yourself. 3) Any design samples. Please send this BEFORE your logo contest submission so we can be sure you are the kind of designer we are looking for. We don't want to waste your time.

    About the Contest:
We are new to this contest thing, and have just recently learned about 99designs and seen Mira Costa College just run a logo design contest, so please be patient with us. If this offends any designers, then they are most likely way too traditional and or established for us. We are trying something different. It's not like we can take anyone's art, we are going to plaster one of the logos all over everything (including billboards our uniforms, and our cups and our coffee sleeves). If we stole it, we would be the laughing stalk of our little city of Vista, so don't worry, we are not stealing anyone's logo. You are also welcome to place watermarks over the submission. We will only place the logo on Facebook for a few days to be voted on, and then the winner is the winner!

The winning logo will get $200 and the design firm or freelance individual winner of the contest will receive a written contract with Lush Coffee, which over the life of our business will be worth thousands of dollars. I know this because I just redid my other company website, and just doing that over 3 years has been thousands. We will need lots of design work. In addition, the winner will receive one (1) free organic coffee or tea from our drive-thru location for an entire month!! That’s a $200 additional value!! The months of April or May in 2011 are the redeemable months. The coffee-a-day give-away may be transferred to a friend if you can’t drink that much coffee or tea, but we think you can!

In addition to all this, the winner will be announced in our newsletter, and will receive free ad placement in the newsletter (which we may just have you design) for two (2) issues valued at over $300 in advertising. That’s a total of $700 minimum in cash and prizes for helping a locally owned and eco-friendly drive-thru café plus a contract for all our branding needs!

Second place submission will receive honorable mention in our newsletter, emailed out to over 3,000 locals and the top 10 (ten) submissions will receive one (1) free coffee or tea for their job well done. Yum!

    What We are Looking For:
A logo and brand identity that communicates our mission (see below) and lets the customer know they will experience amazingly fast service, and expresses the fact that we serve coffee and tea. We don’t want to directly put the word organic or eco in our logo, but we want people to associate these concepts with our image.

Your Submission Should Include The Following (3) Three Items:

~Logo (this will go on our huge lighted billboard sign and on all our other signage, and all over our uniforms, cups, etc.)
~Business Card Layout (Just use gibberish for the text)
~Sample Menu Layout (Just use gibberish for the text)

Submissions must be received by March 6th, 2011 at 12 noon to qualify.

    Artistic Guidance:
Google the word eco to see some ideas we like. The color green and vines and leaves are all pleasing to us. Simple yet memorable with the words Lush or lush or LUSH and the tagline Coffee & Tea or Coffee and Tea are best. We are toying with the idea of adding Drive-Thru Coffee & Tea as the tag, but this is just an idea. Leafs, trees, wings, cute cars, steam, and mountains are all additional identifiable things that can go into the mix.

    About Us:
Our Mission is to provide a delicious cup of yumminess faster than you can say “sparkle” and send you on your way with a smile. From our cheeky marketing image to our organic espresso and fine teas, we provide a stellar eco-friendly product every time, and as we continue to grow, we promise to continue this policy of excellence.

if that what they will pay the designer. imagine what they will pay the workers there. ....in ¢ents?

    wow...
this is in San Diego, maybe whoever wrote the ad is not to blame, when you see sites like 99cts for a logo, people think you know what? that's what logos are worth, I mean, is just a little drawing how long could that take right? 15 minutes tops.

On the other side, I learned not to get mad at these people, because if they don't care enough about their brand to hire a designer to do this, why should we care in the first place?

these people never had any intention of hiring any of you guys, they are looking for whatever thing lands on their lap just so they can stamp it on their coffee mugs. So in theory no one is loosing any business right?

How's that for my attempt at a positive perspective on this sad story
    hahaha

we had a client come to us who had one of those $40 logos done for him. he thought he had a great deal because he was a start up and wanted a minimal investment in his brand. but next thing he knew, his business took off and he had been using that shitty mark on everything and built up quite a bit of brand equity, and the best we could do for him was polish that turd.. without a full on rebrand, which he wasn't willing to do because dude was cheap to begin with. so ya, its fun to see this kind of shit come around and bite them in the ass.

"if they don't care enough about their brand to hire a designer to do this, why should we care in the first place?"

    because:

"when you see sites like 99cts for a logo, people think you know what? that's what logos are worth, I mean, is just a little drawing how long could that take right? 15 minutes tops."

    • True this is just a small co, but that type of thinking spreads. I already have bigger companies asking for new website+rebranding for $500scenek
    • website + rebranding for $500scenek
    • they just use computers to do that stuff anyway. can't take that longtymeframe

Let's start posting similar serious ads for attorneys, doctors, architects, etc. following this method.

The person that wrote this for Lush coffee and tea has obviously drank to much Lush coffee and tea. Sounds like they're on crack.

  • duhsign0

They should see this thread. Maybe a does of reality will at least make them to embarrassed to post something publicly like this with their company's info on it.

    lushcoffeetea.com; lushcoffeecompany.com, lushcoffeeandteacompany.com

    all available...just sayin

    • please someone buy those domains! Please!!!!OSFA
  • abettertomorrow0

Meh...I still don't see this kind of stuff as a threat. People who go for it, will go for it, and the client will get the quality of work they asked for.

  • OSFA0

Tell you what, what if we buy the domains, and take over the 'contest' by making it official on their official site?

    • ha! seen this done to sports illutstrated! too funny.duhsign
  • Arvizu0

I can't believe they don't already have those domains!

    • probably having a contest for those too :) reallllllly excitingduhsign
  • ali0

Hey check out this one, you win...
'the opportunity to have one of their designs printed on our materials and featured in our next collection'

    http://www.zafiro.com.au/

    And the fine print:
'All entries become the property of Zafiro Australia and may be used for promotional purposes both during and after the competition.'

So basically they've made up a competition to get lots of free artwork and you win the privilege of handing them your artwork and rights to it.

  • ali0

At least you get $200 from the other one.
