Great reel! Makes me want to pick up 3D but I'm low on educational resources and really starting to plateau with animation in AE.
- Julesvm0
@jamesomega give C4D a shot... it's easier than you think and it's integration with AE is tops.

Hey Jules, awesome reel! I recognize a lot of it from the boob tube. Some top notch stuff in there.
You work with Circle(represented by) on Adelaide, eh? You know Mary Naylor?
- CyBrainX0
I also liked it a lot. I loved the work and the music was a good choice (whatever it is). I didn't feel it was too long. I'd go with this length for a little while and see what feedback you get. The only thing I might look for that wasn't there was some interesting transitions from one piece to another. You have mostly jump cuts. Maybe not necesary, but the best reels have those interesting segues.
And there are definitely some mographers out there. We need more!! Keep sharing. I'm mostly a web/ad guy with some AE and C4D but I'd stick to motion graphics full time if I could.

Great stuff.
Where did you get that opening audio from?
- Julesvm0
@Andrew nope... Them repping me is relatively new (~6 months) and I've only dealt with Karen Michael and Laurence. Seams good so far. I've only done the tourettes foundation job through them.
Also, glad you like the reel. I see your from TO... where you working?

I liked it. Looked like great work.

Amazing reel. The length was fine for me (said the actress to the bishop!) as it kept me entertained but this isn't my area of work at all so not sure what your clients would expect. Really enjoyed it and the music is spot on.
- Julesvm0
thanks for all the feedback guys, great critique (it really helps to get these notes before I'm taking it around to clients) - based on this response and some others, I'm now toying with a slightly shorter cut. I'll let you know if I decide to replace the one there now.

are you looking to get hired by shops, or work freelance, or start your own thing and pick up jobs directly?
- bored2death0
What's the song? I think I've heard it before...
- Douglas0
i think the length is fine. maybe a bit long by normal standards, but works ok here. all i really needed was the first 30seconds to see that you know your game. the rest is gravy, take it or leave it.
obviously your production value and animation skills are high, but it wouldn't be bad to see a unique directorial style pushed further.
- Julesvm0
the opening audio is a track from weird collection called "Music for a French Elevator and Other Short Format Oddities by the Books"
the books are phenomenal and I suggest you check out some of their actual music
- Julesvm0
yeah - douglas, I think you've hit the nail on the head - that 'unique directorial style' thing is the real rub in all this, I've been trying to accomplish it for some time, but I've thrived mostly off being kind of a chameleon with my style (regrettably)... I'm trying to push for work where I have more of a personal imprint. This is the first promo material I've done for myself at all in about 4 years... so I'm hoping it leads to more creative opportunities where said goals can be accomplished.
To answer your previous question, I'm looking for mostly freelance work, with production companies and agencies, I have no interest in starting a company (is that what you meant by 'your own thing'?)

Consider that an animator's demo reel needs to be approximately a minute long. Every skill set needs to show something different. You are directing and you need to show transitions/cuts...ability to make decisions. I believe direction is more storytelling which takes longer to witness. The length of your reel seemed appropriate.

Juies I was more curious about the copyright? Is this audio from the 60's or something?
- Hombre_Lobo0
there are few motion pros round these parts dude and im sure a lot of web / print guys still enjoy a good reel. Feel free to post this stuff :)
- yupmoldero

really liked that reel dude. very very nice. like your self - branding. liked the tune a lot too.
(im sure you've heard this before but just in case) if it were me though i'd shorten it down. personally i always think sticking to 1 minute or less for reels is a good idea, keep it punchy and put only the best work in there keeping the quality level high.
There are a few projects in that reel that compared to other works in the reel were nowhere near as good, id throw them out and only have the best stuff in. Obviously its difficult as you've already matched a lot of the reel to the audio track so its a ball ache.
thats just my opinion, really like it though!
i hope to have a reel as nice as yours in a years to come!
