Do we remember only the stories we can live with? The ones that make us look good in the rearview mirror? In The Night of the Gun,
David Carr redefines memoir with the revelatory story of his years as an addict and chronicles his journey from crack-house regular to regular columnist for The New York Times. Built on sixty videotaped interviews, legal and medical records, and three years of reporting, The Night of the Gun is a ferocious tale that uses the tools of journalism to fact-check the past. Carr's investigation of his own history reveals that his odyssey through addiction, recovery, cancer, and life as a single parent was far more harrowing -- and, in the end, more miraculous -- than he allowed himself to remember. Over the course of the book, he digs his way through a past that continues to evolve as he reports it.

Just finished this about an hour ago, so good I finished it in record time for me, like a week. A story about a California kid, a track star in high school then college, then Olympics. He's later shipped off to WWII where he becomes a bomber pilot and eventually gets shot down. He endures near death on a raft in the middle of the Pacific battling thirst and hunger and sharks. Until he is rescued by Japanese forces and ultimately has to live in POW camps for the rest of the war. A totally amazing story.

The Descent is a 1999 science-fiction/horror novel by American author Jeff Long. It describes the discovery and exploration of an extensive labyrinth of tunnels and passages stretching throughout the Earth's upper mantle, found to be inhabited by a malicious species of alternately-evolved troglobitic hominids.
Basically - it's based on the premise that if you believe in God, you have to believe in the devil, and the likelihood that it lives in the center of the earth. Really great book.

Good for any parent to be more involved in their child education. Good for managers. Good for anyone really open to look at their own education and what they know. How important language and different mediums can be. How important the ability how to choose which questions to ask is, and being able to detect bullshit. Probably should be a must in schools, but I can see how the teachers might not like that.
