I need some book recommendations.
Here are some of my favorites:
Hard Boiled Wonderland (Murukami)
The Fountainhead (Rand)
Breakfast of Champions (Vonnegut)
Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television (Mander)I can always rely on QBN for snide comments and good taste.

Oh I should have mentioned I am looking for authors that are not listed there. Kafka on the Shore was a great book.
I didn't really like Life of Pi although it had its moments. Good ending.
- Beatrice and Virgil is very different, and BEAUTIFULLY writtenmonospaced

a friend mjust gave me a book called 'The Long Walk', it's the book that inspired the film called the way back. haven't read it yet but looks ace, especially if you like travel/adventure books.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Long-Wal…on another travel note, try the Gringo Trail. also, war reporting for Cowards by Chris Ayres.

I am always looking for good, modern sci-fi ... stuff of quality, not just fantasy (aka, Dune, Ender's Game). I did some research and discovered the "Spin" series by Robert Charles Wilson. Not bad at all! Well written and great concepts to wrap your mind around.

Ender's Game is good, one of the only sci-fi books I've ever read, probably ever will read.

Light- M. John Harrison
I am not terribly scifi inclined, but the writing was excellent, and the story kept me interested.

a few I dug:
Ayn Rand / Anthem
Stephen King as Richard Bachman / The Long Walk
Frank Herbert / Direct Decent - more of a children's, teen based story, but really interesting take on the future of information.
Ursala Le Guin / Lathe of Heaven
Guillaume Lecasble / Lobster
This is a super whacky story about this chic on the Titanic who has a sexual relationship with a Lobster...

The Things They Carried is a collection of related stories by Tim O'Brien, about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War, originally published in hardcover by Houghton Mifflin, 1990. While apparently based on some of O'Brien's own experiences, the title page refers to the book as "a work of fiction"; indeed, the majority of stories in the book possess some quality of metafiction. Even though the characters are based on a work of fiction, they show similarities to real soldiers that O'Brien knew during his time in the war. A few of the characters show similarities to characters from his autobiography If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home. That is why O'Brien dedicated his book to the men of the Alpha Company.
