You guys actually understand how WHOIS works and how ICANN works right? Many being Web Designers and such. All registrars are required to have accurate WHOIS information on file. This is a mandate of ICANN, not the registrars.
GoDaddy, like many registrars have a privacy option that hides your information from the general public WHOIS lookup via proxy, but allows bodies like ICANN to access it. Some registrars charge for this, others are free.
Plenty of reasons to rally against GoDaddy, but make sure its a valid one.

For those wondering:
ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - The body which oversees the allocation of domain names to organisations and companies. It governs the top level domains and delegates powers to other bodies who govern the individual ranges of names.
Really registrars are nothing but public facing middlemen for ICANN.

so where is the option to hide it from the whois lookup?
- dbloc0
Per our registrar agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the contact and registrant information listed for your domain name must be made public. Using false information is a violation and can lead to the termination of your domain name registration.
We understand most people do not want their personal contact information (name, address, email address, and phone number) made public in the Whois database. That’s why — since 2002 we have offered private registration services through an affiliate company, Domains By Proxy® (DBP).
When you purchase DBP private registration services, the Whois database lists DBP's name, mailing address, and phone number instead of your personal contact information.

Every time you register or renew there is a box right below your domain to add privacy ($9.95 yr I believe).
If you are adding after the fact, go to 'Domain Management', (under 'Domains' then 'Go To...'
Click on your domain in the Domain Manager and the option pops right up above it with a few others.
Its also under 'Domains' > 'Add Ons' and few other spots.

I signed up with Godaddy a few years back and haven't updated yet.. but I need to since it expires in a few weeks. What company should I switch to?

I friend just referred a client to me. Got an email from him saying the client said my site was down and a go daddy page was up because my domain expired.
I had the domain set to auto renew. Domain expired on 24th. Godaddy had it set to renew(charge my card) on the 28th! Fucktards. Guess I lost that client.....

Just call them. Do you know you PIN? It's in your account details.

Everyone bitches about the constant tightening of the WHOIS data, ICANN's annual WHOIS data update requests etc, but if someone had their domain highjacked because of loose rules they'd demand God himself intervene. Can't have it both ways.
- ETM0
Just to put things into perspective regarding paying for the privacy feature, regardless of who you use at about $7-$10 year (so free)... remember we used to pay $50-75+ a year just for a domain back in the day when NetSol had their monopoly going. Now we pay less than $10 and complain about another $10 to secure personal data.
- dbloc0
@ETM I don't mind someone having control over it, but giving out personal information to the public seems a bit strange and unnecessary.
