monday morning bump for those of you who missed it over the weekend. this thing is running great. :)

bump.

Not bad, the only part that's a bit shitty is the DVD burner, the optiarc drives aren't actually made by sony, only branded and tend to be unreliable, breaking quite frequently.
If that happens, get a decent panasonic. The screen won't be too hot either.
- the forums I've read said to use the sony optiarc because some burners cause sleep issues somehowjohnny_wobble
- and the optiarc doesn'tjohnny_wobble
- I dropped this thing on the concrete floor with only a thin layer of bubble wrap on it and it still worked fine. :)johnny_wobble
- pop in a sony blue-ray. ;-)akrok

yeah was gonna say i would have spent some of the dosh I saved on a decent screen
- doesn't need to be great. it's replacing an old CRTjohnny_wobble
- Colour reproduction on the CRT will be much better than on the new TFTkalkal
- CRT for the win tbh.
0ms response time, and the best colours you can get!
wish they made thin CRTs!Hombre_Lobo - (like kalkal said :))Hombre_Lobo

keep us updated, i'd love to see how this turns out so i can do it myself
- MrAbominable0
is it correct that the danger in hackintosh builds is that newer OS often conflicts with hardware components?
- not if you use parts verified by other buildersscarabin
- like these http://kakewalk.se/c…scarabin
- looks like kakewalk hasn't been updated for a whileerr
- well I am sure they do it on their spare time.akrok

more importantly....what will it look like?
- like the first alienware computers that came out. :)

^show off!!
making me very tempted! :P
you imaged it yet? (take a copy of your hard drive so you dont have to faff about again?)
- no, not yet.johnny_wobble
- DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!kalkal
- Also, it's nice to do it before you fill up your system with crap.kalkal
- yeh kalkal!
i do an image on a fresh install, then do another when ive got my shit installedHombre_Lobo - that did make sense, but sounded like bs!Hombre_Lobo

I've had the same one for 4 years and it still runs like a champ. Using it strictly for music production.

Boz is great at this...

i remember i heard something about that i5 was faster then a i7, which is funny cause it's cheaper too. it that right? Hombre_Lobo.
- That's right dude!
The generation i5 2500 is faster than the old i7's and as you said is cheaper!Hombre_Lobo - The new gen i5 is a different socket (1155) so it uses differen. Motherboards which cost a bit more than old gen CPU moboHombre_Lobo
- thank you. :-)akrok
- ...good info.akrok
- That's right dude!

One recent pain is that Apple has killed iMessage on hackintoshes. There are workarounds, but they're still early and not entirely successful.

I used to be quite in to building computers, as a hobby. Internet access to OEM parts and a little bit of ingenuity gave you access to running Windows on bleeding edge hardware that hadn't yet hit the consumer market and was fast enough to make computing feel in tune with how fast our bodies wanted computers to tactfully feel. Now its 2014 and reliability is so much more important, most heavy duty computing processes are offloaded to cloud processing. I can't imagine building a computer component by component and having to suffer the headaches of cheap Chinese components barely holding up. Computers are fast enough now, even consumer models manage photoshop, video rendering and other business related tasks with no latency.
Building a hackintosh seems like a fool's errand because of the pitfalls and confusion when software needs to be updated. Unless you need extreme performance out of a computer or you just have loads of free time and see this as a hobby, why bother when Apple computers are reasonably priced and are notably recognized for being well built mechanically.
- This isn't 1995 mate,
have you seen the beast you can build and isn't everything made in china?GeorgesII - I must say I'm not biased, but the satisfaction in having a one of the kind machine beats all for me :)GeorgesII
- That's cool if your bespoke computer makes you happy, but it seems like too much trouble for me (maybe I'm old)epic_rim
- what trouble are you talking about?GeorgesII

update. sleep and restart are definitely issues.
waking from sleep causes a reboot. after rebooting, the keyboard and mouse don't work (maybe all usb? not sure). turn it off, then back on and they work again.
same for restart, usb problem after restart. turn it if off then back on and they work again.
shutting down is fine. no usb problem after turning it back on.
I'll mess with getting the sleep working sometime, but for now, I'll just leave the fucker running. No other problems have come up. Got CS5 installed and it runs well for what I need.

i didn't watch the whole thing but this guy seems to have a solution

I built another hackintosh to replace my old one three weeks ago. It's easier than installing Windows at this point (if you buy the right parts). Motherboard and video card are the main components. I used the GIGABYTE GA-Z77-DS3H & ASUS GeForce GT 640 for those interested.
$700 for a computer that's faster than every Mac except for the Pro and the top of the line Macbook Pro. Throw in another $100 for an i7 instead of an i5, and it will smoke the top of the line mac pro too.
Everything works. All my software, my Focusrite Pro40 audio interface, everything. Mavericks updates without any problems. Hackintosh 4 life.
- I did buy this stuff during newegg's black friday thing, so it might be 750 or so not on salesection_014
- the video card itself is lower than any offered in the iMacs, so definitely won't smoke themmonospaced
- < $700 though mono - come on.fadein11

- Can you list exactly what you got and link to how to build one? I'm going to start one this week. Thanks!instrmntl

^the best thing about apple is being able to copy most CS5 apps directly from the applications folder.
sooo good. just copy from one machine paste to another and they work, all running from a folder, like some portable windows apps. Thats the future! MODULAR!!
