Bike of the day

I've been doing daily bike rides during this quarantine period, and using this time to tune up all the bikes in my fleet.
I finally got a project that's been on hold for 5 or 6 years rolling.
Behold, the venerable 1990 Bridgestone MB-3!
Yeah, the cockpit is kinda kooky, but I'm old now and I needed to flip the bars to make the riding position more comfortable. I don't love the aesthetic, but it's quite functional and I'm trying to work with the parts I've got. Might replace it with a more tasteful handlebar setup soon.
Even at 30 years old, this thing shifts precisely and rides a lot more smoothly and nimbly than you might expect.
Gonna take off that old plastic pie plate once I get some space from my boys.
Might eventually convert it to a 1x7 drivetrain too, but I've never done that before so not sure if it'll work out.
- Should note: All original parts except for saddle, seatpost, bars, and tires.nocomply

username checks out.deadsperm - Those handlebars...shapesalad
- LOFL those handlebars. You're a madman. Also putting that saddle on that thing. Looks like a fun ride.garbage
- also @deadsperm do you know what a nocomply is?garbage
- I didn't, now I know. Thanks.deadsperm

Long story short ended up with another new bike. Found a massive crack in the driveside chainstay on my original Felt, and thanks to a local shop, got a new frame, and well, here we are:
Highlights → Felt FR30 frameset (aluminum frame, carbon fork) / Shimano 105 R7000 drivetrain / HED Ardennes Black wheelset (running 700x28 Continental Grand Prix 5000s) / fi’zi:k Arione R3 Versus Evo saddle
Eventually will be going a full Easton EA70 cockpit, but, one thing at a time. Also, this bike is a lot of fun to ride...
- Is this your daily commuter?zarkonite
- @zarkonite Could be a commuter, but not daily. More like my zip zip zoom bike.skwiotsmith
- I fully know I could go lighter & faster & all carbon, but something about the aluminum frame/carbon fork just works better for me...skwiotsmith
- It's a nice setup, looks like comfortable enough for long treks. I got all carbon now and I feel like it's too easy to ride =) It just keeps on gliding foreverzarkonite
- whenever I stop pedaling.zarkonite
- It's comfortable & fast. I've already claimed a Strava KOM on it (a 3mi urban segment no less).skwiotsmith

Seriously, whats the point of fixies outside the look?
Pretty sure it's 98% for the look and 2% for less mechanics, cheaper cost.
- poser-cyclemoldero
- I enjoyed my time riding one when they first became the rage. I think it made me a better rider. Glad I did it but much happier with gears and brakes :Pmandomafioso
- I always find it funny when I see people on super nice looking fixies, but they all look super uncomfortable because there's zero ergonomics on what they builtBennn
- #redhookMrAbominable
- fixies can be really really light and also really cheap. they can go fast and only fast. you can ride backwards on them. I think those are the main thingssarahfailin
- If you’re into cycling they’re a fun break from the norm. They help develop even cadence and can be fun to do tricks on. Don’t take it too seriously.ben_
- It takes about two weeks to get used to the idea that if you are moving, your legs are moving. Once you become comfortable with that its really nice.slappy
- It doesn't take any extra effort and isn't any more or less comfortable than a single speed bike for commuting round the city. I run a brake on the front thoughslappy
- Also, Im a slightly over weight dad in my 40s. Zero fucks about how cool or not I look.slappy
- so why not chose a bike with proper security features? like leggit breaks :)Bennn
- A fixie with a front brake stops pretty good. I'm not saying fixies are better in any way, its a subjective thing.slappy
- i have disks brakes on my bikes and i can make a proper emergency stop, wich is very useful in a city if you dont want to die or get hurtBennn

- Clipless seems like an odd choice for a fixie.section_014
- and disk brakes.deadsperm
- single gear != fixedzarkonite
- Not all single speeds are fixed. Single speeds can be freewheel or fixed, this one has a flip flop hub by the looks of it allowing for either ...RoyBoyII
- I was wrong, single speed, no fixed: https://tinyurl.com/…OBBTKN

Frame is new-to-me, but recently had this built up. 2015 Foundry Harrow with Whiskey No.7, DT Swiss ER1600 23 wheel setup (running 700x32 tires), and a SRAM Rival 22 drive train. Other things throughout, but those are the basic highlights.
Not pictured are the Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL pedals, but I can't commit to them just yet. Could easily go back to SPD. I'm not racing cross, but just looking for something fast that can handle a number of different terrains...
- How much?OBBTKN
- The frame +fork/headset/handle bars/bb) was $500, and about another 1800 from there. Some parts were gifted, others lifted.skwiotsmith
- New a complete bike was $2800, and I came in well under that but with a much nicer setup.skwiotsmith

Anyone riding on ZWIFT?
They've recently released ZWIFT CYCLING ACADEMY:
"Get stronger together with Zwift Academy 2019. Our world-class 8-week training program brings out the best in everybody. And it's your chance to win a pro cycling contract."
Kind of neat / thoughts!?
- +imbecile
- I rode Zwift over the winter. Kept me in great condition during those long MN winter months.skwiotsmith
- The CANYON//SRAM women's team has a few folks from the Zwift pro challenge that have made it through to the pros. Totally legit...skwiotsmith
- That said, while I'm not looking forward to training indoors, at least there's Zwift...even if it means 4am riding times...skwiotsmith

Strava Stories
"This year, there are over 90 riders starting the Tour de France who regularly upload to Strava – that’s nearly 50% of the field. From sprinters, to climbers to GC contenders, there are some pretty big names who will be giving you a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the biggest race in cycling."
- Anyone ever do the Strava challenges where you ride or run as far as an event? I’ve done it a couple times, nice motivation.imbecile
- I do the running ones - 5k, 10k ..etc ...there's some fucking fast people out there!Bluejam
- Nice! I have to ride. My knees usually hurt just watching people run.imbecile
- STRAVA is excellent motivation IF you don't get too caught up into the "global competition" element.ideaist
- seems subjective...imbecile

- nice, but what's the story behind that rear frame design?shapesalad
- The chainstay?
Shorter chainstay with more clearance.deadsperm - such a cool bike. Where do you buy this?Calderone2000
- @calderone: https://alliedcyclew…OBBTKN
- $5,299.00Krassy
- I don't get these gravel bikes. Drop bars and aggressive geometry make sense on the road because I'm going fast.section_014
- On bumpy ass off-road trails (with possible jumps), I want flat bars and shocks.section_014
- Everything is going the way of the long tail. There is a market for this, you should see all the subgenres of MTB there are right now.deadsperm
- cyclocross / gravel bikes go fast tooimbecile
- https://www.youtube.…deadsperm
- No chainslap?Mattjanz3n
- Also wider tire clearance. This bike just won Dirty Kanza. I think in two categories. I don't like the look of it but i like Allied.MrAbominable
- I never understood the drop bars, either. They are the worst for control, imho.formed
- @formed
They are not for better control but efficiency. Getting lower makes you more aerodynamic so you save energy.deadsperm - ^save energy AND increased speed. plus, addl hand positions to reduce fatigue.MrAbominable
- Chainstay lets you change the chain without opening it. Good for carbon drive.lnu
