I like the idea. I'm sick of all the trolls.

there are alot of other and better cool, fun, productive features we could use on QBN. an invitation based forum is not one of them. besides, it's always invitation based til they get popular. look at facebook, gmail, who else?...

Let's face it - we all want to be 'special' .. unfortunately the reality is, being a part of a members only message board isn't going to make anyone feel great for long.
The problem is quite an interesting one though - how can you form a group of 'like-minded' people on the internet, that is cohesive and .. and meaningful?
In life, we go through school - and are forced together .. we rebel .. form cliques - we identify what we want to be, in part by choosing who we want to associate with. Barriers are put up, and people are positioned on either side of the fences that have been erected. It serves it's purpose well.
Cut to adult life - and we're no longer forced to associate with people we don't care to associate with .. but still the old mentality remains. Why?
I haven't been part of QBN for that long in the scheme of things .. I started reading in 2008 - and really appreciated the cutting, and non-generic nature of the chat here. It seemed that the place had an 'edge'. I know that's a hackneyed phrase, which can mean anything (sometimes less than) .. but it set QBN apart from many of the forums I'd come across before.
Why did QBN have this edge .. probably because it had large personalities which weren't worried about filtering what they really thought.
The change now? These personalities have left .. they most probably got bored.
-> If anyone can join a group - a group can't exist. <-
There needs to be boundaries .. for a while QBN was able to squeeze a bit more life out of it's dying self through the 'secret' blog thread .. a meta commentary on everything else that went around. But once that was gone there wasn't any more scope for oblique inclusion vs. exclusion.
QBN lost meaning.
In the (ahem) end .. every story needs a beginning and an ending. It's a fact of life. Maybe QBN has found it's natural ending .. because _everything_ has a life span.
Playground tactics will always win out - because those who strive for more are often ego-fuelled and have a desire to win.
What would be a nice conclusion?
Maybe a quiet dignified death.

I really don't understand this. there are very few people that have been here all the time. i was a NT addict back in 2002, made some friends, came back in 04, all sorts of different people i didn't know, back in 08 and it's a different set of names again. what's nice about this place is that you can drop in and out over the years. in 2002 people were bitching that it wasn't what it used to be back in the good old days. get over it.
they guys here are in their 30's now, no doubt many of us will have kids, get promoted, have no time for this shit, 2 or 3 years from now things will have settled down a bit and we/they/you will get back to QBN for some good nonsense and design banter. wouldn't that be a shame if it had rotted away because a bunch of cunts thought elitism was cool and you hadn't got the memo.
if you don't like lol cats, spark up some real debate that the trolls can't keep up with.

I think it's a great idea and it's a prime time to adopt it during this mad developmental stage of QBN with things changing on the site every 10 minutes.
Those devs need to slow down and take a break.

Introduce "ignore" button: if more than 100 people ignore you then you're out (or you can't post for one month).
- sofakingbanned0
I agree, the ignore button was the awesome. thats all this place needs. a way to block the crap you dont care to see

Why not some way to downgrade people? I see this used on a lot of other forums – or a way to report specific posts as abusive / retarded or otherwise not in line with what we all want from this place?
The reality is that this shit all takes time, and QBN will take the time to do it right if they decide to make changes, so don't get all stoked for change just yet...
- Quality control, is that where you're heading? Nice in theory, obliterating in reality: just have a look at the nonsense topics <--Peter

Let's not get carried away with this talk about death and whatnot.
I think people assume the site needs some particular people to maintain its identity. The truth is though, all the old school people could leave (permanently I mean, not just in the sense of declaring that you've left) and there would still be a popular site.
QBN doesn't really need any of us and vice versa, it just happens to be a fun place to shoot the shit about vaguely designed related stuff. If you were hoping for something more that isn't there, the failure is not on the website but entirely on you.

Twitter is where it's at i'm afraid.
It's the new Public Voice and the Editors Choice posts are rarely new and exclusive anymore because of it. I think thats where most QBN people are now. You can choose who to follow not like this place, where every other link is spam.

Most people, actually just about everyone here, don't understand the nature of this site and what it is for. Funny enough I suspect maybe Hedge gets it, considering his cynical mercantile approach to things.
This misunderstanding is a source of unnecessary frustration. Is this what you wanted? Is it worth it? Why don't you just let go and enjoy...

I don't understand what the problem is. I've been coming here since before NT existed, somewhere in the 1998-2000 range. While there are annoying punks here and there, overall it has been great fun and an invaluable resource.
Invite only will kill it.
What I would like: a "Go to end of thread" button, so I can just quickly get to the end of WOTD, COTD, SYLP.

twitter will eventually die on its arse....
5% of the stuff people post is only just resourceful.

I don't really see Twitter as a replacement for a forum, do people really use it that way?
Also as liveforever alluded to eventually Twatilicious or Twitbook or some other next big hype will come along and Twitter will be the new MySpace/AOL/Friendster.
