Had a few designer friends given briefs to do after interview, it never went well.

i've gotten "can you redesign our whole brand and please come back within 24 hours so we can see your skill set"
I just ignored and never went back. if this is how they are going to hire me, I can't imagine how shitty it would be to work there.

Tons have dealt with this, never do spec - it's the highest form of insult in this industry and a clear sign that whoever is interviewing you is a gade A douche.
- that's why we need to regulate out industry, do you see this shit happening to architects?brodster
- we don't need regulation to act with common sense.NONEIS

I used to think "free portfolio items", or "do everything for free as a test then we'll hire", etc... was a viable means of breaking into an industry that I was interested in. So I tried that route for a _very_ short lived while.
It's never turned out good. If they have the nerve to ask for a service for next to nothing then they're telling you that they're sleazy from the outset.
In the end "entry level" people letting themselves "get used" for the sake of breaking in, just devalues the industry.
