I used to think "free portfolio items", or "do everything for free as a test then we'll hire", etc... was a viable means of breaking into an industry that I was interested in. So I tried that route for a _very_ short lived while.
It's never turned out good. If they have the nerve to ask for a service for next to nothing then they're telling you that they're sleazy from the outset.
In the end "entry level" people letting themselves "get used" for the sake of breaking in, just devalues the industry.
