I'm doing a series of illustrations for a dental book, aprox 10 images and i'd like to know what to charge.
do I charge Per image, per hour, do i ask for royalties from sales?
Illustrations will be simple line drawings.

if you charge by the image- you'll loose a lot of time during endless revisions. royalties probably wont get you very far. i'd say that hourly would be the way to go. i've done a lot of book illustrations and the hourly rate was the only way that i've come out on top.

- i disagree. per image is the way to go. just specify # of revisions.arthur
- what aurthur said. plus good luck getting them to agree to hourly.horton
- this is just from my experience and doing it both ways, the only way i've made money is by the hourbjladams
- i've done tons of illustrations hourlybjladams

Charge which ever will get you the most amount of cash – Depending on how quick you are and how detailed the illo's are? Can't imagine royalties from a dental book will amount to much. Get some dental treatment thrown in too :D

Perfect, thanks guys.

Charge Per Image, which is a rough estimate of your time + 2 stages of revisions. State 2 stages of revisions to the client and explain further revisions or sketches means more money per hour.
I also give a discount on images if they just want for one use - basically a backwards way of saying they pay a premium for full ownership, so it is cheaper to just license the image for one use - and make sure they understand that means they don't own the image and you can resell it / relicense it to others. Its a good way to get people on a budget on board and have a foot in the door to sell the image to them exclusively down the line when they have more money.

question for oddslob or any one for that matter:
what is the going rate for a full buy-out?
say i charge them $1000 for single use for the initial project, would it be reasonable to charge an extra $1000 for full rights?

Charge per image. Charge enough that will cover your time for 2 rounds of revisions at most, then charge additional for more revisions. Most books don't need more than one round of revisions.
$1000 is only $100 per image, which isn't very good. I don't know the complexity of the images, but my advice would be to charge no lower than $250 for any image that is going in a book, unless it is a tiny spot illo.
They want a full buy-out? Are they using these illos for things other than the book? Full buy-out is usually 100%-200% above what you would normally charge for the illos.

technically, i'm sure you could have traced and billed for all the simple line art required for this project by now, no?
