I do both. I think software companies tend to lay low on the subject because they appreciate the market penetration pirating software creates.
- There probably would be no Flash today without Macromedia Flash piracy 10 years ago.raf
- exactly, also how photoshop became so prevelantDodecahedron

also depends on the software.. and how affordable it is..

I pay for mine. (1) because I feel like it's the right thing to do since I'm using it to make money. (2) because I can write the cost off as a business expense. (3) Having used crack software in the past, it's a bitch when one day you go to open it and it doesn't work.
Although the cost of it hurts at the time I buy it I don't think the CS suite is unfairly priced. As ridiculous as this sounds. If they priced it lower I don't think it would feel as legit to pro designers.

I actually paid for Adobe CS2 suite + Studio8 in full about 4-5 years ago. I have since been using a pirated CS3 as I didn't feel the upgrade cost was reasonable.
I will be paying for CS6, whenever that comes out.

My employer does.

never paid for any adobe apps as i usually have them thru my jobs, but i do pay for the smaller ones like FTP, conversion apps, fonts, and other things like those.. i like to support the smaller vendors over the giant ones, since it is they are the ones that need it most.

up until about 2 years ago did i ever buy software and let me tell you... it felt reeeeeeeaaaally good getting the legit box in the mail and registering it.
and yes it's way overpriced, all of it. with a little research i found cs3 for half the price adobe was charging and it was all legit.
- < if you have a friend that works in education or goes to school - the education discount is awesome.bulletfactory

I teach a class once a week at the local school so I've been able to always get the student discount. But yes- feels great to own the legit copy.

How does everyone feel about buying the education version and then using it for work?
I've always felt that people who do this are breaking the license agreement and are just as guilty of piracy as someone who downloads it via torrent, etc.
- yeah except for the spending $800 partkona
- i purchased the ed. version - i was in higher ed, but have since moved on - i'm not going to throw it away ffs.bulletfactory
- I'm don't mean to tell you what to do. But you are still 'stealing' from Adobe's point of view.nb
- they can have their software back, but they have to give me my money back.bulletfactory
- yeah you are supposed to upgrade to the commercial license.johfiner
- luckily, as i said before - my wife won the master suite - so i'm good until upgrade.bulletfactory

NO LONGER A STUDENT?
An important note about upgrading your software: Your personal investment in Adobe products may continue to be valuable, even if you no longer meet the qualifications for Adobe education pricing. Contact the online Adobe Store or your local reseller for information about upgrades to commercial versions of your products.- i would guess that this applies to the next purchase or upgrade, not what you already own.bulletfactory
- no, it is to upgrade your license from educational to commercial. not a new version.johfiner

nb - I can't speak for all software out there, but at least for the Abode Suite, you can use the student discount version for financial gains. There are some limitations if you go corporate, but you can do all your freelance work on it.
- Oh really? Maybe I should actually read the agreement. ;) I just assumed.nb
- BTW - as long as you are fit for the student version of course.SoulFly
- Actually, I didn't assume it. It's what I was told in school. But I've never verified it.nb
- Oh, so once you graduate, you're not supposed to use it for freelance or paid work?nb
- i wonder once you graduate can you upgrade to a full lics, or do you have to buy that shit again?moldero
