If you drop a laptop...

... and a pointy rock breaks through the RAM casing and it won't start up, are other components likely to get broken?

My trusty little laptop got dropped during a move the other week. The RAM itself looks ok but I believe it has probably been damaged.

My laptop won't start up and just leaves the lights flashing when I turn it on. I think this is because the RAM is broken.

I've now taken my hard drive out and put it in an external caddy to back up elsewhere and it is still working, but clicking and I fear that means it's on it's last legs.

All of the other components look physically unscathed, and I'm hoping that it's just a case of replacing/upgrading the RAM and a new HD in there.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm asking here, but does anyone have any knowledge of what is most likely to break when a laptop has a rock pierce the casing. Is sudden shock but no physical impact likely to do permanent damage elsewhere?

It was actually my dad that dropped it - It was in a bag (not a padded laptop case) with some socks and stuff that could absorb shock. He didn't realise it was in there and dropped it to the floor from hanging height. Only a few inches of drop but it was onto a sturdy rock...

think of the laptop as human skin, if you fell on a sharp rock and it punctured your ...lets say left kidney.. would you decide to take yourself apart and see what is up or goto a doctor or a specialist in this case and see what they can manage for you.

as a computer laptop product design i can't stress enough the use of a protective case for your expensive and valuable electronics.

socks as a barrier for protection just wont cut it. i suggest you take your laptop to a specialist and see what magic they can accomplish.

    good luck.

    • Socks weren't a barrier. I was home for the weekend and traveling car to flat. I normally take my case but in a rush I couldn't find it...orrinward
    • couldn't find it, and I didn't foresee my dad carrying stuff from the car to the flat...orrinward
    • i understand, just saying in general.. a padded case wont protect 100% either but..e-pill
    • anything falling on a sharp rock will be damaged.. again best of luck fixing it..e-pill

I'm debating taking it to a specialist or not. It wasn't running great recently and it was only £350. I've had specialists fail to fix an old machine for £150. I'm currently backing up the HD and deciding whether or not to just invest in a new laptop. I'm trying to borrow components from friends that match and see if it works with new components.

If a tree falls in for....

    • But to be serious for a moment, _ANYTHING_ could have broken -> claim a new one via your home insurance and salvage the hard-drive.lukus_W
