Say hello to mechanically separated chicken. It’s what all fast-food chicken is made from—things like chicken nuggets and patties. Also, the processed frozen chicken in the stores is made from it.
Basically, the entire chicken is smashed and pressed through a sieve—bones, eyes, guts, and all. it comes out looking like this.
There’s more: because it’s crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia, soaked in it, actually. Then, because it tastes gross, it will be reflavored artificially. Then, because it is weirdly pink, it will be dyed with artificial color.

tastes good though doesn't it? Always shocks me when people act like this is news to them, it's been going on forever.
Looks nice there actually, like angel delight.

Aside from the mehanisation and the bitter aftertaste of middle class revulsion, what's so bad about this? Why is this so different to our forebears eating the entire carcass flesh and fat, then boiling down the bones, skin and gristle to make a stock? "BOILING DOWN BONES TO MAKE SOUP? - Euuurgh!"
- Hey now. Nothing like a good beef stock made with roasted marrow bones.Continuity
- the ammonia part?flashbender
- And the disguising it as chicken part? Stock etc was a bi-product after you'd had the good stuff, a diet of MCDsRanger
- and iceland would mean you never actually eat any real chicken.Ranger
- Plus when making stock you are not bleaching, colouring, adding artificial flavours etc.Ranger
- A good stock is a product of love, care and respect for the ingredients. And it's so handy!Continuity

Anyone have a 'non-partisan' source for a description or breakdown of the Mechanically Separated Meat process? I'd like some qualification of this ammonia claim, but can't find anything outside of blogs reguritating the same content (I'd already seen the above pic a couple of times on different sites over the past few weeks).
Don't get me wrong - I'm not totally defending the idea of shitstock industrial food production, I'm just beyond getting my panties in a twist about it.

in Beef
"Federal officials agreed to the company’s request that the ammonia be classified as a “processing agent” and not an ingredient that would be listed on labels."
