after just asking for web designers to focus more on the entirety of the screen for a grander visual in the "Portfolio" thread, i am happy to see you have answered me with your full on visual. i like the black/ white/ red colour scheme, it is nice on the eyes and pulls my view all around the page to see everything rather clearly.
the yellow on the other hand is a disturbance to the rest..
i like the spotlight section on how it opens itself up on the entire screen and gives me lots of choice where to go..
the forums page seems a little lacking in comparison to the other pages..
nice work.

Really nice work, man - not much to crit, really - perhaps.. forums and 'about' are a bit of a let down in terms of visual design..? The tightness of the design highlights inconsistencies between grid layouts across sections - so when I browse, headers jump aound a little. Unlike e-pill, I really like the yellow (colour's a subjective concern, so best ignore everyone's opinion, I find!) but I wonder why one signup button is yellow, whilst 'tother is red?
Yours is how sites should be. Accessible content, well laid out, all outside of proprietary formats.
Good job, peeps!

"Yours is how sites should be. Accessible content, well laid out, all outside of proprietary formats."
well said and i totally agree..
..cept for the yellow bit.. :P

heh - there are a couple of recognisable names of really old NT members in the forums there.

On the first page, the $ goes before the 4.99 not after.
And I think the nav buttons are really bland and template-y. You don't really need them IMO, there is probably a better way to do it that is still simple and clean.
Besides that it looks really good.

except that the portfolios "kind of" look like index-whatever sites, this seems pretty cool, especially the design for dummies features

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I really appreciate it.
detritus & e-pill : I agree with both of you on the yellow button. It was a difficult choice. We didn't want to stick another red button in the header as we wanted the logo to be the only red element that grabs the eyes attention. At the same time we didn't want to repeat the yellow signup button in the body. Overall we think it was a good compromise. We might reconsider in the future.
I agree on the forums. This is the page we spent the least amount of time on. It will improve in the future. Same goes for the About page.
Frosty_spl: Yes the $4.99 vs 4.99$ was also a conscious choice as well. I have seen this done before in various annuals.
I also agree with you on the button. We had them plain and simple at first but noticed that they didn't not jump our enough against all the other visuals. We had to sacrifice simplicity for attention.

monospaced: That is the purpose of 4ormat. To provide a system where anyone can create a simple portfolio. Eventually we will move into themes.
We eliminated all the hassle of creating a server, setting up scripts or settings and of course maintenance. We also wanted to provide a system that could be used by anyone by pricing it lower then any web server space.

+1 for fixed header - really like it.
On the signup page I would keep the layout consistent. Now it looks out of the context. Keeping header over there would add the consistence.

The site looks really nice,
I could only imagine the amount of work that went in to building and integrating the website, iPhone and iPad features...
Congrats!

303: Thank you . You are right. We should have integrated that as well. Will fix on the next update.
Utopian: Thank you. Yes its tons of work. So far all the users are enjoying it. Creating a system that allows for modular control and still solves layout problems for other devices is not an easy task. Often times my brains hurt after long work sessions :)
Cheers,

Overall I think it's quite nice. One thing that's bugging me is the vertical alignment. I think the centered header would be tighter if you extended it's left and right edges out to the full 980 page width. So that'd mean moving over the left block containing "Follow 4ormat on Twitter" and the 6 navigation buttons to the left 75px or so. And then move the Sign Up/Login bit to the right 75px or so. It just looks odd on some pages like About as is.

I'd open spotlight sites in a new tab or window so people don't close them and lose your site.
Also the Spotlight page is left aligned while every other page is centered. It's a little jarring.

acrossthesea: Thank you. The top menu alignment was tricky. With large browsers the menu stays in the centre but once you squeeze the width to less then 1000px then the menu stops moving leaving enough space for the logo. This was the only way to make this work without doing any fancy Javascript.

Amicus: Thank you. Will fix the links opening in new window.

oh great, just what we need... ANOTHER website to host your portfolio. I'm surprised you don't get banned for competing with Krop.

Beautiful layout and site... everything flows so perfectly. I can tell a ton of thought and work went into this.
