Apple backpedaling on some iOS development restrictions, will allow third party tools
==
Woah, who saw this coming? Apple has changed its sup-controversial stance on third party developer tools for iOS apps, now allowing any and all comers (which would obviously include Adobe Flash CS5), "as long as the resulting apps do not download any code." Apple's also publishing its App Store Review Guidelines at long last, which will give developers a better idea of how their apps are going to be scrutinized by Apple before they submit them. We're sure we'll be hearing plenty in the coming weeks as developers and arm chair analysts rifle through Apple's so-far-secretive guidelines, but mostly we're just excited to see what sort of innovation and development accessibility we've been missing out on while these third party tools have been off the market.

Seems like people will be able to publish apps made with Flash CS5 for iPhone/iPad.
This is great news and shows how Android rising can influence Apple. Ain't it great when there's competition.

- probably more to do with antitrust lawsuits. App Store success has proved how right they werePIZZA
- Apple were wrong to enforce the policy in the first place. Highlighting app-store success as a reason why they weren't wrong, is stupid.lukus_W
- wrong, is stupid.lukus_W
- how right they were... on their own head, the public has spoken, then yelled, this is the resultMiguex

"as long as the resulting apps do not download any code" what does this mean exactly? ie. self updating / code that will be executed ie. applications compiled as swf or sthg. or would this include markup and the like?
- Boz0
no xml is not code.. it's talking about execution code (for example downloading an swf that has a code executing something but is not part of the initial app). With Flash CS5 iPhone packager you can't even do that, so you are safe. XML, databases and APIs are all data not execution code.

@lukus_W
Nah.. they are not saying sorry..they got their ass kicked by Android and government inquiry..That's why..
They certainly didn't do it out of the goodness of their heart.

I see about 20-30 iphones a day in londonPIZZA - Of course not - it's all about incentives. They have had to backtrack though .. which is pretty similar to an admitting they didn't get it right first time.lukus_W

Missing paragraph below the fold;
* Shareholder happiness is very important to Apple. If your application is likely to provide competition in an area that Apple current dominates, profits from, or is likely to profit from in the future, your application probably won't be accepted.

I just read Adobe's share on the rise on these news, so this means using Flash to create iPhone apps it's now allowed as long as the apps don't download code?
- Yeah, I think .. from what I read, seems that the features for App creation in the CS5 suite can now be used.lukus_W
- .. but were they actually included in the final release?lukus_W
- yes i think sospraycanII

So, this means Flash will still not run on iPhone, but I can use a third party tool to convert my .swf or .fla file into a file that runs in the iPhone? Also, Flash CS5 already comes with ways of doing that?
Sorry, I'm still on CS4 and did not explore too much on the subject.
Please confirm if my thoughts are correct- yep, they relaxed the rules on using 3rd party IDEs or tools to develop for iternexbcn
- ernexbcn0
Flash player will still be out of it because a prohibition stills exists for any app that downloads code, but it seems that using Flash IDE and compiling an app with it according to the guidelines is now allowed.
