If you're not particularly used to using a Graphics Tablet, this is a fairly inefficient way of going about things. imho, you'd be better off 'painting with a brick' as Scarabin puts it, rather than getting to grips with a flawed interpretation of an entirely new work flow.
Mind you, things really depend upon what type of end result you're going for - if you absolutely need digitally-rendered brush strokes, then a Wacom is the way to go.
Otherwise - scan, convert/trace within Photoshop/Illustrator &c.
If you're just looking to spunk some cash on another consumer toy, to leave it gathering dust in the corner for the next few years, go right ahead.

I have an Intuos 4 medium at work and an Intuos 4 large at home. The large takes up a lot of desk space, but I much prefer it for drawing accuracy. My art director swears by the Cintiq for doingvery detailed environment sketching and concepts.

It differs massively pr2. I don.t use that fancy screen tablet, but I do have a big tablet and you just can't draw accurately with a great big bar-o-soap mouse in your clopper.
Put it this way.... which of the following would give you the most refined and accurate drawings in your sketchbook...
1. A fine nibbed pen
2. A bar-o-soap sized lump of chalk.

Think of the tablet as your mousepad, and the pen tool as your mouse. When you tap the tablet with your pen, it's the same thing as clicking with your mouse. It's really that simple.

^ 10x better because it has a pressure sensitivity that the mouse doesn't.

i guess my question to all the people with tablet experience is how does it differ really from using your mouse and just looking at where your pointer is located on the computer screen?

I been using my wacom with photoshop trying to get some illustrative effects. Anyone use painter? Seems so slow.

There's the Cintiq 12wx if you want to draw on an lcd-screen. Still $1000 though...
I'm using a Intuos4 Large myself, works fine for me.

I did all the legwork for you

The only cheaper option is using a pen tablet like the bamboo
http://www.wacom.com/bamboo/bamb…Then you you just use your existing computer screen

you're doing it wrong, just scan and trace
- pr20
can one of you enlighten me on the process?
You scan the drawing as BG layer and then using your monitor trace over using the tablet?

I use a bamboo with photoshop and does good enough for me.

You could also use layers in photoshop.

Possible yes.
