I was going to title this "Tory scum axe the UK Film Council" but I figured that might upset Moth ;)
The Design Council is under review.
they have pushed the games industry to the wall by scrapping a tax relief.
they have shut down important organisations that are there to provide oversight such as the Sustainable Development commission.
They have stopped building new schools or fixing
I suppose on the upside there will be lots of out of work creative types able to volunteers for Cameron's bullshit Big Society project.
although, is this all a good thing?

yea it's a tough time but we're hardly starving and eating bark now are we? :)
I'm trying to be provocative because I don't think we (the public) have got to grips with the logic behind all the cuts. I can understand some but others I am not so sure of.
I like Armando Iannucci's take on it
@Aiannucci Am away, but hearing of end of UKFilmCouncil. Mad move by macho numbercrunchers. It made UK a gargantuan load of money. They're wangpots.

And so it begins...
This country is run by cunts now, and to all the people who votes for these cunts...
"If ya don't hear... You must feel!" - My dad
- was run by cunts before... only cunts who spent shit loads on nothingtrooperbill

I guess my philosophy on it is that subsidising something probably means it should die.
I dont think any of the hollywood houses are subsidized, they're just good, and commercially strong.
Royal Ballet, film, music channel 4 frankly. If people want it they'll pay for it. Propping up old forms of media like opera arent 'the arts' what people do everyday is 'the arts'
In america they go after philanthropy. I think the philanthropy model is better. It produced the Ealing classics amongst others. the UK film industry has been shit because its subsidized, bland an generic.
There are some very very wealthy people in the arts from elton john to paul mccartney. Maybe they should help fund younger talent.
State sponsored creativity is universally shit.
- You're an idiot.lukus_W
- Thats why ITV is so good and the BBC is rubbish right?Chimp
- the bbc isn't subsidized, its paid for.kingkong
- This is true but it maintains impartiality (mostly) and doesn't have to pander to commercial interest directly.liamh
- That's why it's selling off everything.

"State sponsored creativity is universally shit."
as opposed to all those high quality creative films coming from Hollywood?

like the UK is running out of money or something.

I hope the Tories continue full steam ahead -> the faster they ruin the country, the faster they'll be out of office.

Damn those Tonies!

Lukus_W: Unfortunately it's not that simple. Cons invariably axe things "to save money" but spend the savings anyway. Then they're ousted and the next government is in the difficult position of raising taxes and/or cutting funds to *other* programmes to fix things, giving the Cons ammo in the next election.

i_monk; I don't know what else _can_ happen. Hopefully there'll eventually be a rebellion.
