Any domain is just branding. Dot com being the default, the first thing that enters peoples' brain when they see an alternate domain suffix is, they couldn't get the dot com version;) And they will always try to go to the dot com variation of the name.
So for the most part I would use second tier names only when it's appropriate to the content. dot fm for music, dot tv for video, etc. And keep in mind these are all really country specific domains, so there may be a small amount of localization at play in terms of SEO.
A better option IMO is, coming up with a variation on or abbreviation of your name, or buying a domain you want off someone. Always helps to search a site like http://www.buydomains.com in addition to godaddy, you'll notice a lot of domains you assumed were taken are actually for sale. You can also keep tabs on something like http://www.freshdrop.net which shows domains that were recently allowed to expire.

youwantobe.meThen realised I was a bit drunk and had misspelled my way out of $30 : /
- Try selling it, you could probably still get something. Maybe it's the hip hop version.ukit
